Scandinavia for WordPress

While not quite as finished as I would’ve liked it to have been, here it is nonetheless. My entry to the WordPress CSS competition. You can download the CSS and accompanying images in this zip.

Now I have to go to a meeting now and I’m sure it’s bound to not work. So I’ll fix it tonight when I get home or tomorrow. Regardless, Alex has the final entry in his inbox waiting for him to get up tomorrow morning.

Comments are welcome. I would love to hear suggestions for changes, I have several ideas myself, so don’t hesitate. Also, please report any bugs.

  • Not bad, not bad at all :)
    Good luck in the competition!

  • Well it’s very generic and low-key, which is – I think – a good idea for a template that is to be used by a wide range of people.

One of the things I’ve butted my head against before when trying to do a template for WP was that I couldn’t make it generic enough. I constantly wanted to change things around and add hacks and stuff.

The competition rules were luckily really strict with that, so I didn’t go overboard on ‘features’ or changes in the PHP, it was only the rudimentary things I had time for.

I’d like to either add some color, or perhaps make a different version which has mroe colors in it.

  • ive seen that BG pattern somewhere before, some free pattern place.

pretty neato dude, could use mabye a header image, i dunno, im no design guru :P

  • Well… I think your own site looks a lot better… /shrugs

  • looks nice. i would have liked to have this as a default template when i was setting up.

graeme– the background looks like it came from http://www.squidfingers.com/ . he’s got some great stuff there.

michael– in my browser (firebird 0.7), the very top background image of the content div is pushed one or two pixels to the right. i’m sure you’ve already seen it, but i felt it was worth mentioning anyway.

    good work, as usual.

  • Hi, I’m actually trying to set this up because it was the closest thing to what I had in mind, however I am having funky layout problems and being a total CSS moron (I’m good at PHP though), I can’t get this to line up like I want. CSS always makes me feel retarded :(

    Here’s my site.
Here’s what it (hopefully) should look like.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Well, my html got stripped out, hmmm.

    site: http://stephenvandyke.com/
    design: http://stephenvandyke.com/.source/v5.2.png

Thanks again, and very nice template… very clean.

  • Never mind my whining, i seem to have gotten things under control. Still a lot of modification to do though. I appreciate the template!!!

  • I personally like my own site better as well, but that’s sort of the point. The Binary Bonsai is specifically tailored to showcase me. The CSS competition entry isn’t. It’s supposed to be a neutral template that people can either use right off the bat, or design on top of.

I couldn’t get away with putting a woman on that design, it just wouldn’t work.

  • He, that’s right, the woman wouldn’t make it very… generic. :) But I was thinking about the design in more general terms, like colors ‘n’ patterns ‘n’ stuff.

  • I found your template via Alex King’s page just as I was moving to Wordpress yesterday and liked it very much…

Scandinavia is a great starting point, very clean and soothing, and it made the whole process that much more enjoyable, thank you! I’ve made some minor changes so far, but the only real issue I had was with the calendar, which nudged itself slightly out of the content area. Not a big deal since I wasn’t going to leave it up anyway, but thought you might like to know. Cheers!

  • Is it possible to get the Photoshop files for Sandinavia similar to the ones you provide for Kubrick?

  • I’m afraid I no longer have it :(

  • Thanks for the CSS and the “GNU or whatever”license! :) We are using a slightly modified version at http://www.yelah.net/sthlmsblogg/ (a left-wing blog on local Stockholm politics).

  • Well done, Mike. I´m cooking out my design based on your nice template now.
About your IE5 (Mac) issue: I was digging around at wordpress.org and found this fix :

Just remove the quotes from the image links and tada, they show up.

    background: url(images/link-out.gif) left top no-repeat;
However the link-GIFs will not show up there…
Thanks for sharing your theme with us!
