Rumors have a tendency to get blown out of proportion. I need merely mention Duke Nukem Forever, and every gamer reading this will break down with laughter. Nonetheless, I think it is noteworthy that from now until the end of the year, I’ll get to play Doom 3, Halo 2, Half-Life 2 and Knights of the Old Republic 2. In that order probably.
Does it get any better than that? No, not really.
(Actually it does, there’s also Jade Empire!)
Do you honestly think Duke Nukem Forever will ever be released? Seriously, in your humble and honest gameplaying (and game creating) opinion.
On that note, if it does ever get released do you think all the pre-hype will kill it immediately, moreso than now? Or, do you think it might have a fighting chance if the gameplay is superior? Nevermind the graphics, which were outdated 2 years ago.
This will be one of the big fall gaming years, and much deserved after an awful summer release session (which is not very shocking, but still). Well Doom is next week, so I suppose August is still technically summer..
Enough with self evaluation midstream, Halo 2 looks fantastic, and one can only hope the PC version (rumored for 2025 =0)) will actually be playable this time around.
Those you mentioned are all fantastic, and they are only a few to be released. MxO (yeh yeh, flame away), the next GTA game, Tribes: Vengeance, and quite a few others look fantastic.
kartooner: I don’t know. I just don’t know. I can’t quite imagine how they’ll be able to pull out a full modern up to date game anymore. But I’ll tell you this: I’m glad that I haven’t been working on this game for 5+ years. That’ll wear you down, I’m sure.
The amazing thing, as far as I’m concerned, is that literally nothing has leaked about anything… Nobody really knows anything about what’s going on inside 3D Realms these days.
But I think I’ll have to go with: They’re going to pull a Daikatana.
I mean, they’ve more or less been working on this game since Duke Nukem. I can hardly remember Duke Nukem!!
Daikatana has a tombstone right next to Deus Ex: IW in the Lame Over-Hyped Game Graveyard. Although DX2 had some redeeming factors, namely the pretty sweet looking graphics (love the shadows).
I’m really looking forward to Half-Life 2. After seeing the latest E3 footage, it looks fantastic.
Michael: Funny you think they are going to pull a Daikatana…actually when I read Kartooners post, that was EXACTLY the same thought, with the same game comparison, that crossed my mind. (Btw: I played through Daikatana in the patched version…its not good in anyway, but it’s playable. But it’s the only time i’ve experienced a patch that takes over an hour to be installed).
DNF will come out eventually; I have a feeling it won’t blow anyone’s socks off but will just end up being another soso FPS. Strangely enough, I’m actually quite looking forward to ‘Sims 2’, obviously as mentioned before there is the new GTA, and as always, Doom3 (P433r the L33tness).
im looking forward to the following PS2 online multiplayer action – Starwars Battlefront (not really a big starwars fan but looks like a good game), Battlefield Modern Combat, KillZone, GT4 (of course), Burnout 3, Ghost Recon 2, and non online, Metal Gear Solid 3, Possibly Nam Shellshock 67, Possibly F1 2004 (although that is also available online).
And if youre a PS2 online games player, look out for me in Socom 2, Splinter Cell and Ghost recon, my name is OAP Somefool on most of them and I play with the Old Age Playstationer clan – sorry for the shameless plug
I have HL 2 on preorder. I’m not especially hot for Doom 3, though.
Ive never really seen the interest in Doom, I guess I found Marathon was so much better that Doom just couldnt compete. Same with Quake really, Quakeword was good multiplayer fun but as soon as Unreal/Unreal Tournament came along, Quake III just looked like it had no gameplay.
Unreal came out long before Quake III, and a comparison isn’t really fair for either game. I personally didn’t care for the style of UT myself, but liked Q3 enough for me to get a bit of gametime under my skin.
As far as I’m concerned, Doom 3 is all about immersiveness.
Killzone, now there’s a game that might make me buy a PS2.
I’ve had it with anti-terrorist games though.
Just look at all this wrongness.
Matthew, the gameplay of quake 3 is infinitely nuanced. Much more so than unreal tournament. I love both games (not counting the first UT, which was horrible), and I have played them a lot, so I believe I speak without any experience-related bias.
What I have found is that you can keep learning in Quake 3. Much more so than UT. The success of the latter UTs was due to the fact that they put a lot of work into mimicing the feel of Quake, but adding more “large element”, like vehicles and game modes. Quake 3s true brilliance is in the details; the game mechanics are just so subtle and detailed that you can keep on learning and learning and learning. I have never seen a bigger spectrum of skills in any game than in Quake 3. You can have a player that is a million times better than you, and he can most likely still find someone who is a million times better than him.
Kartooner, I really don’t get you and all the others haters.
Sure, DX:IW had some severe technical problems on PC. They had dumbed the game down a bit, because moronic couch potatoes with attention deficiency syndrome seem to be the norm for gamers these days – but other than that, it was the best story driven, open ended, good looking FPS game I have tried since DX1.
And about Duke – All is not lost. If they are just the least bit smart, the will pull the same stunt that HL2 failed to pull off:
Take as long as it takes to make a really solid game (which they are doing :), and don’t say a damned thing about it until it’s good, solid and ready for release.
Then drop a few hints (like the crowbar with the shadow ad in EDGE for HL2), and unleash it suddenly on the public.
What they have going for them is that they can take another 2 years if they want, because people are already laughing at them. People don’t believe it will come out, and they expectations peaked AND deflated a long time ago. So as long as they pull off a solid game, I think they can be a success without having to live up to their original hype.
I forgot to say about Q3 that it follows id Softwares games purity: It does few things, but it does them so exceedingly well, that it’s just ridiculous.
I found Quake 3 just too ‘cartoony’ which may sound odd compared with UT – although the more recent incarnations of UT have followed the Quake ‘fat body’ styling which ive found slightly irritating – especially as UT is itself quite cartoony but it just feels more gritty to me for some reason, maybe its the lack of pentagrams and demons etc.
The Doom and Quake series , particularly Q3 just feel like a glorified version of Space Invaders to me – run in room, shoot everything, run out to the next room – just doesnt seem to be much depth.
My favourite fps game so far is Deus Ex which I found very engrossing and really pulled me along the story line.
Socom 2 online is quite flawed, with lag problems and rooms banning certain weapons or people leaving games early to protect their rank (honestly! its a game! when i last looked I was 40,000th and something) but its a great community game and a closed room with friends is great as you know no one is going to act like a knob. Honestly, get a copy, get your PS2 online and have a look for our OAP Open room in Norge or UK lobby – its great fun.
Splinter Cell i found a surprisingly fantastic online game (apparently it was developed separately to the offline game) you can be either a spy (stealthy and 3rd person view) or a mercenary (not so stealthy and 1st person view). Its unfortunately a maximum of 4 players online but it leads to tight, stealthy, tense action where youre always looking behind and sneaking up to a mercenary, grabbing him by the next before whispering “im gonna kill you” down the mike then breaking his neck is good fun from both sides ;-)
Ok, I assume that you are not commenting on Quake 3 single player?
I am purely talking about multiplayer gaming in regards to UT and Quake.
If you are comparing single player games like Splinter Cell or DX with single player Quake, then it’s like comparing applet to spaceships. There’s no common ground.
yes with regards Q3 and UT I meant multiplayer. the other comments were unrealted asides.
Matthew: Please press enter twice for a paragraph change, makes reading much much easier. (Also, I is capital :)
A sucker for sequels…
ok, I lazy sometimes so I forget caps completely. I know its irritating but I think its far less annoying that m8 and u and woz etc etc etc, though I dont mind tho and imo, lol etc.
sorry, I hit ‘let it be heard…’ then saw my horrific “ok, I lazy”
Brian: Don’t get me wrong. I’ve never considered myself a “hater” persay when it comes to any game. I own Deus Ex: IW and find it to be overall (overlooking the inherent flaws) an exceptional game (storyline-wise). I was more or less referring to the overhype and apparent “console” feel.
Compared to that of the original Deus Ex — which is by today’s standards outdated in the graphics department — IW just was lacking something and that was overall polish. Spick and span polish.
I gotta say that ever since a couple of years most games seem to be all about making the latest ultra super powerful video card cry tears of blood, I’m not much of a gamer. Sure, I was big on games before but the way things are now, I cant be (namely, video cards cost ridiculous amounts of money over here in .ar).
However, I am looking forward to Kotor 2, even though I tend look at sequels warily.
I also gotta tell you that I liked the multiplayer aspect of UT a lot better than the one of Q3, and yes, I dislike the cartoony graphics too. One thing I noticed is that for me UT2003 got old too fast for some reason…
I very much doubt that Doom 3 can beat the immersiveness of System Shock 2.
Oh, how I would love to see a Shock 3 with either the Source or Doom 3 engine…
I second that Johan. A third System Shock would be great. SS2 was the most immersive and terrifying game I’ve played, ever. Those zombies were intense. There’s even a project (already released but in the works) where someone has created higher res models for it; dubbed Rebirth.
Here’s a torrent with a 3-minute interview with iD about Doom 3. I have the full 20 minute show in better quality, but I can’t remember where I downloaded it.
It shows a lot of the new monster designs, so don’t watch it if you’re allergic to spoilers.
