Firefox 1.0

FireFox Rising

I’d like to congratulate the hard working Firefox team on, what is ostensibly the greatest thing to happen to the Internet in quite a while. Good job!

  • Ohh yeah..
Love that fox. This could be (I hope) the product that finally can rival MS in the browser wars. If there is such a thing anymore. :)

  • Yay! World’s best OSS product just got better

  • I can’t agree, because it won’t run on my box (shit!). The last release worked fine, but now I just get a bunch of XML failures, undefined entities and so on.
No net a good job, puts me in an unneeded hassle.

  • Loving it. I actually was able to install it without having to uninstall 1.0PR. Axel were you running a version prior to the PR release? It may have had problems and you need to not only uninstall the previous version but also delete the mozilla folder in your documents and settings.

They changed the Live Bookmarks button, making it less obtrusive. Feels faster so far a well. And of course the new find features that were in the PR are still alive and well. Now wheres that NY Times ad…

  • I have found that the profile can become incompatible over multiple upgrades. I was having all sorts of trouble with it on the computer I use at work, but now it works beautifully. And I just upgraded this one to 1.0 without a hitch.

  • Finally 1.0 is out! It also seems a little faster now.

  • I’m loving this so far. Great software development as always.

I am unsure as to the revamped “live bookmarks” orange speaker icon… The argument that “Live Bookmarks is not RSS is true, I’m just not sure the new icon is enough… It’s still kinda mystery to me, but maybe It’ll grow on me.

  • Jeez I’m so tired, and that last post was so full of grammar mistakes. Here’s what I wanted to write:

I am unsure as to the revamped orange “live bookmarks” speaker icon. The argument that “Live Bookmarks is not RSS“ is true, I’m just not sure the new icon is there yet. I still think it’s kinda mystery meat, but maybe It’ll grow on me.

  • Anyone know anything about FireFox vs Safari?

  • I use both Safari and Firefox, and don’t have a distinct preference. At work I use Firefox because for some unknown reason, Safari is crash prone, but at home I go with Safari because my Powerbook has it as default on a lot of apps and it works fine.

What is going to be the fate of Camino now that Firefox has pulled ahead?

  • My one concern is keeping me from downloading the official release.

Every other time a new release comes out it breaks extensions and skins. Then I need wait for other developers to update their plugins to the newest release. I simply don’t want to upgrade it if means losing all of my preferences.

Can anyone tell me if they’ve had these kind of issues with Firefox 1.0?

  • Yeah. The Tablet PC TIP extension no longer works, which bums me out in lots of ways. =( Otherwise, v1.0 seems great, and a lot faster than even 1.0PR.

  • “The Tablet PC TIP extension […]”

    What does it do?

  • The last release worked fine, but now I just get a bunch of XML failures, undefined entities and so on.

Alex, that can occur when you upgrade on top of older versions sometimes. All you need to do is clear your profile and start a new one. Try loading Firefox like: “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” –P, or comperable on your platform, to access the profile manager.

  • Every other time a new release comes out it breaks extensions and skins.

Paolo, I have not had any extensions break on me between the 1.0PR and 1.0 Gold releases. I run AdBlock, Web Developer, Download Statusbar, Session Saver, Gmail Notifier, and WebMailCompose. I run the stock skin, so I can’t vouch for that.

  • I just downloaded 1.0 and it runs a LOT faster than the Preview Release. Awesome!

Michael, you mind if I grab your graphic for an announcement on my site? I’ll be sure to link back here.

  • Go right ahead :)

  • Hmm…can any of you guys get the “open link in tab” to work? No mather which option I choose, it still opens in a new window, instead of tab…

What, this isnt the Firefox support forum? My bad….

    :)

  • No problems here, Søren. Might be time for a fresh install.

  • I have been using it most of the day and have not had a bit of problems with it. I love this browser!!

I thought back today on when I started using it, back in it’s phoenix days, and it has steadily gotten better with each release. I hope this contiues and shakes Microsoft up a little.

  • ah well, as a followup to the problem I mentioned further up apout tabs:

I hadnt gone into about:config and changed browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs to True. I might ad that the helpfile doesnt mention that you have to do this (even on a fresh install), to get all the tabbed browsing options.

Or is it just my install (on both winxp and mac os x) that is weird?

  • Mine worked just fine on XP. It was an upgrade, though.

  • I upgraded to 1.0 and the saga of broken plugins and skins continues… I’ve blogged and flickrd images of what happened on my blog. [sigh]
