Xmas 2004

And so we’re back, once again, in the mainland of Denmark; Jutland. Chance would have it that as we boarded the bus, we ran into Carlsen, Ellen and their daughter Laura, also on their way back to spend Christmas with their families.

A note on driving in the dark: In ’98 while I was in the armored infantry, we used to extend our weekends into monday morning, in an effort to spend as little time on base as possible. So Nielsen, one of my platoon mates, Holtegaard and myself would get up at around 4 o’clock in the morning, don the uniform and speed into the darkness, getting to the barracks just in time for cleaning them…

Cascade Failure

Cascade Failure

So Matt finally got around to working me into his webcomic. I’m the bald guy; and no, I’m not really that bald (nor am I that thin, but I’ll let that one go). I’m not sure if it all makes sense to people who aren’t in the comic, but hey… :)

I know Design-Foo!

Design-Foo!

Weee, I won Chris’s 2004 weblog awards! Ph34r my design-foo! I would like to thank Rikke, and her ever-lasting patience with me and this damned blog :)

Great stuff, thank you everyone! Though it feels awkward coming out on top of all these great bloggers and their sites. Might I suggest a new, broader scoped award some time in spring? Where we really get the word out to everyone we can, line up all the coolest sites out there and see what’s what. I am honored and happy that Freya has been met with such a warm welcome. But I must admit to feeling unworthy :)

Regardless, bring on the design-foo belt!

RoboCop With Love

Rikke gave me this sweet Robocop figure as an early Christmas present. Rock!

Apple Support

Over the last few weeks I’ve had both my Powerbook G4 and my 3G iPod 20GB in for repairs. And there seems to be a lot of people who’re interested in hearing how my experiences with Apple Support have been, and how that whole thing actually works.

What you do is, you call up Apple Support. Most of my calls have been great, and I’ve talked to really nice people who took the time needed to help me, and even walked me through a range of things that had a chance of fixing the Firewire problem I was having with the Powerbook. Obviously it didn’t work, but it was nonetheless nice to be dealt with in a proper manner.

When it comes time to send in the device, Apple UPS’s you a box with the necessary papers and instructions, and all you have to do is place the faulty device in the box, and call back UPS. That’s it… They’ll pick it up, and while it’s gone you can track the progress of the repairs from Apple Support page.

My Powerbook was back in 4 days flat, and mind you it had to take a roundtrip to the Netherlands, where it most likely had its logic board replaced. Mr. iPod took a few days more, but in a little over a week I’ve now got a brand spanking new replacement.

So that’s how easy it is… I was pretty apprehensive about sending in my things, as horror stories have a tendency to flourish, but I won’t blink the next time I need to have anything repaired, that’s for sure.

The King Returns

I would have been disappointed, had I walked away from this epic conclusion to the greatest story ever told, not feeling both breath– and speechless.

Luckily, and not surprisingly, the only disappointment I can raise, is that of it being over and done with. The Saga of the Ring concluded. That is indeed sad; though we are if nothing else left with memories from these past years.

I can’t gather my thoughts just now, I am much too eager to peruse the rest of this magnificent tale. And I would venture the guess, that so are you.

Let us reconvene later and discuss to our hearts content.

It Draws Near

Saruman and his Palantir

Rikke and I gnawed our way through the first two installments of the Rings trilogy this weekend, in preparation for the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Extended Edition)later this week. Hard to believe that it is drawing to a close; but timely perhaps. I suspect you will see very little of me around next weekend for the same reason.

Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red dawn!

Half-Life 2 (2004)

Half-Life 2 Logo

I’m hard pressed to come up with an experience similar to the one I had, sitting in my pitch black office at Io, big fat grin on my face and a sense of elevation, as the credits for Half-Life 2 rolled over the screen (in alphabetical order, not in ranked mind you). Fifteen minutes later (after having told the world) when I rode the bus home, on the first day of snow in Copenhagen to boot, I was entranced. Usually I hunker down in the far corner of the bus for the 35 – 45 minute ride home, and bury myself in a book. But that day I just couldn’t concentrate on anything but Half-Life 2.

Spoilers ohoy matey!

Segregation and iPod

Well, as promised when I launched Freya, I have finally gotten down to segregating comments from ping– and trackbacks. Something I might add, that I believe WordPress should do by default. The Livesearch Entry is a good example of how a list of pings will look like. Either way, I’ll probably post some code soon for those of you interested in something like that. I’m about to send off the latest version of the Latest Comments plugin that Brian wrote, after doing some 1.3 compatibilitization (so a word!) to it, and once Brian gets the time, he’ll put it up on his site for everyone to download.

In other news, I sent in my iPod for repairs today. I’ve also got the box for my Powerbook down at the office, just need to backup the harddrive and it’ll go in too. I hope the wait won’t be too long.

Either way, I think I have most of the things I need to run the world without it, but in case I disappear from the surface of the Earth; well now you know who to lynch.

Prepping Kubrick 1.3.0

I know that there are a few minor remaining issues with Kubrick (like this), and it is my intention to roll those changes into the final v1.3.0. I try to keep up with the forums, but I’m bound to miss something once in a while, so here’s my plea to you:

If you come across a flaky piece of code, or if you have suggestions that would fit into the scheme of things; let me know, and it’ll go into my todo pile. Furthermore, just so you know, the 1.3.0 will be based off of Ryan’s excellent work and include a good deal of code strains from Freya. Now you know :)

Here’s a question for you, Kubrick users: Should I have the sidebar appear on all pages, or keep it the way it is now?

PS: Shout out to Jens, who helped me with some SQL magic yesterday. You’re so the money!

Kitten’s Spaminator

When I, in preparation for Freya, upgraded to WordPress 1.3, I didn’t have any spammer countermeasures in place for a few days. Which was of course just plain foolish! So the other day, after having heard reports of people getting hit with large amounts of casino and poker spam, I decided to install Kitten’s Spaminator (as well as a few other minor countermeasures), and I’m here to tell you it is teh g00dn3zz, as we say.

Today it’s been stopping a minor wave of spam dead in its tracks. Now I’m not entirely sure what it’s doing, but it’s doing it well.
