I talked briefly to Matt yesterday about kubrick two, where he mentioned that WordPress 1.5 would be going on within a day. And lo and behold, despite the lack of an official announcement on the devblog, you can now serve yourself to one slice of premium blogging solution over at the WordPress Download page.
This of course also means that WordPress now ships with a brandnew template, namely Kubrick. There is one minor thing that I wish I had had the time to fix: this version of Kubrick doesn’t welcome returning commenters, only people who have logged in… But such are the losses of a secretive scheduling.
I have however made enough headway into kubrick two, for it to see release probably before the week ends.
Congratulations to the team, great job guys and gals; Binary Bonsai is now a fully armed and operational 1.5 blog. Ph34r m3!
Cool, another thing to check out… Can’t wait to see kubrick two either, keep those conveyor belts running.
Ive upgraded my wordpress nightly and it was pretty damn smooth. So I wouldnt be worried about anything while you are upgrading.
Oh, by the way, when will Kubrick 2 be in the wordpress package?
Aaron, don’t know. I hope it might make its way in there from the next point release, but I honestly don’t know.
Well, there is a saying, “The sooner the better.” You have a pretty good following with the Kubrick template. Oh, and by the way, I modified the wordpress classic(By Dave Shea) theme to look somewhat like what you have right now on Kubrick’s cousin, have a look http://www.87rounds.com/minutes/ .
Who cares about Kubrik 2 :P
I’m just wondering what the new admin interface will look like! (I’ve forgotten the name of the project – of course – but it looked promising.
I don’t see it mentioned anywhere, but during 1.5 upgrade process your
.htaccessfile is modified. The problem is that WP adds rules, but doesn’t remove exisiting resulting in Internal Server Errors upon completion of the process. The upgrade docs don’t make any reference to modifying of.htaccess, so it is the last place you look … after pulling all of your hair out.It is also a minor PITA to move your existing template over to 1.5 scheme. I use a customized version of Kubrick and it still took me some editing and swapping around. Some tags have also changed, such as $single is now is_single etc.
Wait, does this mean it’s final? Or is it just a beta?
For all intents and purposes it should be final.
I can’t wait to see the wonderful Kubrick two! I just upgraded then and I feel like a new man. Currently I am just testing out Wordpress to make sure my move from Movabletype doesn’t go too bad, but so far I am very very impressed! :)
Michael, i like that subtle dig… okie okie i never said a thing… :) wish it had the returning commenters add on… I really do like that feature on your site. :) I know you will post soon enough though :)
I hope we’ll soon be seeing Kubrick 1.3.0 since it’s what I’ve been anxious for.
BAH! Using prewritten stuff is cheating.
… although I’m gonna have to write a better stylesheet for my blog when I get the time.
Very coolish, this step from last stable release (1.2) is huge, and I think we will se alot cooler plugin integration from now on…
Btw. Michael how does the shuttle project looks, any progress made yet? :)
Nothing to show yet, don’t worry, you’ll see it once we feel confident that we have something cool going.
Rolled to Wordpress 1.5 from nightlies.. heh, that is untill I run a CVS update again :)
“Strayhorn” is a huge step up from the last stable version. Now, hopefully we’ll see Shuttle emerge soon. ;)
Be patient people, shuttle is a long haul project. It will be slow going in the beginning, but when we are done you should be impressed.
At least that is what we are hoping for.
Nice job on K2 Michael.
Rolled to Wordpress 1.5 from 1.2, had no problems except .htaccess stuff. By the way I think you have a problem with categories, clicking to view posts by category gives 404 errors.
I looked for a changelog, but couldn’t find an updated one. So, quick ‘n’ dirty, what’s in 1.5 – except theme support, static pages and multiple blogs – that would make a 1.2 user change?
Sebastian, the admin screens are a bit improved, and definitely different looking (layout wise) than 1.2.
I particularly dig that you can author pages, which basically are entries that are analagous to static content. speaking of static, staticized is redone, and included.
they’ve broken the look&feel into Presentations, and of course kubrick is the default theme. :)
j.
Thank you jon!
It sounds great, but I had some editing to do to have Kubrick display everything in German, and I’m just not ready to go over the whole process again after an upgrade to 1.5.
I think I’m gonna wait until I have a lot of spare time and Kubrik 2 is final and included. 1.2 is not that bad after all :-)
Overall the new 1.5 is pretty good. I am having an issue however with my Blogroll links. Then won’t stay organized in any particular order. Everytime you refresh the page the links get all jumbled up. Anyone else having this issue? This is a fresh install of 1.5 with a new database and everything.
Michael,
In the footer.php file there is a “feed:http://blahblahblah” line for RSS and Comments RSS and it keeps you from being able to use the feed links out of the box unless the “feed:” is edited out. If you do not remove those you get a pop-up saying that “feed: is not a registered protocol” Shouldn’t that be fixed since 1.5 is now live for the masses?
If anyone is interested, I converted my 1.5 admin area to Kubrick. Here is the link for more information: http://www.fuegodesigns.com/blog/?p=104
“But such are the losses of a secretive scheduling.”
Why the jab? This release was well-telegraphed, and a long time coming. We don’t say “it’ll release on day X” because stuff happens, but I would have hoped it was fairly obvious. The official announcement isn’t done yet because there were some download issues with the
tar.gzversion of the release.Well it is a loss with secretive scheduling; I don’t mean is so much as a jab, it’s just the way it is. I’m in the game development business, so I understand fully well how deadlines can shift back and forth for a myriad of reasons. But after all, if there was a deadline that people could aim for, they would know whether or not they should try and aim for the release date.
I work best with a deadline set in stone; otherwise I procrastinate too easily :)
Not a jab, just an observation.
One minor thing that could be edited on the default version is the note on the style sheet that refers to the index.php page rather than header.php for the Kubrick image statements.
HOLY CRAP,
I think the name K2 is phenomenal and makes for a great nick or release name of Kubrick 2 – K2, in layman’s, being that huge ass mountain everyone loves and also the nick of Adobe InDesign 1.0 before it was released (if you actually care)
Kudos,
Denis
Ah, Shuttle, that was it!
How’s that coming along?
And I am already complaining that I don’t have any time to finish my hack of Kubrick 1.2.6… Gotta wait for K2 then !!
Yeah, it’s great that Wordpress 1.5 finally is err… final. :D
I wish I would have discovered your blog earlier, as I’m an aspiring game developer. Some really nice reading here on your blog, I always wondered what working at Io is like (might send you guys my portfolio once I’m done with my education at http://www.playgroundsquad.com). :)
Cheers,
Vidar
“Ph34r m3!”
Oh 1337 one, we already do…
i upgraded my blog to 1.5 today and even manged to get my “theme” based on the kubric code to copy over correctly; however my static pages dont work any more neither do people who look at the posts appear to have the ability to make comments, any suggestions as to what ive fuc*ed up would be great:
website is on http://blog.chame1eon.net
ta :)
I just finished upgrading my blog to 1.5, and for the most part it was fairly painless. Converting my old template into the new style was a PITA tho… I feel that the upgrade is probably not worth the effort for most people with 1.2.2. If you plan on using other peoples themes then I think it would be a great choice, otherwise stick to Mingus.
William: I had the same problem. Even though I followed the upgrade instructions, changing the include(ABSPATH . ‘wp-comments.php’); to comments_template();, the comments completely dissapeared. I suggest copying the comment code out of the Kubrick template and adding it to your theme.
well ive found a work around using the “pages” feature of 1.5 – somthing that makes it very easy to add static pages to your blog, well at least in a form that i am happy with, its not the most elegant of solutions but for now it will do :)
just a couple more quick questions althouhg im not sure if this is Kubric of just WordPress causing this:
on the links section the description used to be on a new line below the hyperlink, how can i get his back?
and also the “search” button used to be aligned with the left of the search box, can i get this back aswell?
on the whole however i think its a great release, and the upgrade for me has been well worth it.
In the index.php, you used blog_info(‘html_type’), however it seems to me that if does not return anything. When I view the source of my page, it says content=;. I wonder if that is a mistake. Thanks, I like Kubrick a lot!
I have however made enough headway into kubrick two, for it to see release probably before the week ends.
Maybe there’s something to be said for secretive scheduling… ;)
Since I’m not collaborating with anyone I’ll have to disagree :)
