The fundamentally largest change from Kubrick to K2 is in how the template deals with plugins. For a while Kubrick shipped with a few plugins and some scruffy code, which people could uncomment if they wanted plugin support. Bad mojo.
K2 automatically detects a range of my favorite plugins out of the box, and will upon detecting set them up for you, no hassles. I try to keep an eye on the whole plugin market, but feel free to mail me about your favorite plugins so that I might give them a spin.
Also, K2 will have a configuration file in which you can toggle between two-column or single-column layout, as per popular request.
Other than that it’s getting some nips and tugs here and there and all around; oh, and it is now entirely CSS driven. No more images needed
This sounds excellent. Can’t wait to see K2!
sounds great!! excited already :P
Hurray! CSS borders and backgrounds are just… sexier :D
Keep up the excellent work. :)
Punk rock! Thank you for all your hard work.
Wee, sounds great, looking forward to see what you conjure up this time.
Im currently using an own theme for my blog, inspired by the theme Benevolence created by Theron Parlin. Main difference is that my theme uses relative size for almost all elements on the page, which suits me better. Also I belive my theme to be a bit more readable, and kinda stylish – but thats just me. :)
I’ll echo what the above people said…
Though, if K2 doesn’t represent an actual leap forward in human evolution, I’ll be most disappointed
joking
Excellent news! I look forward to seeing what K2 looks like!
Cannot wait to taste it!
mmmh…
;)
I currently use a modified version of Kubrick. It’s an awsome theme, and I can’t wait to see the improvements. I’m glad CSS imaging is finally here. I’m just starting to figure out the WordPress code some more. It really is working wonders. This site has been very inspirational to me so far. Can’t wait for K2!
Ahhh, can’t wait any longer! So… [insert sounds of semi-controllable spasms] … excited :-)
Cool! I am excited as well.
When it comes out, I will definitely use it on my blog!
Copier :)
I look forward to seeing the no-image K2 Michael.
Will Kubrick 1.3.0 have a lot of these features?
Can’t wait.
Excellent.. pure CSS driven WP goodness. Nice work Michael. :)
CarLBanks, there is no 1.3.0 any longer. That’s what is shipping with 1.5 was supposed to be.
Absolutly killing me to wait any longer : Michael, are you sleeping more than 3 hours a night ? If so, you should use one on K2 !!
Please, please, please, keep the tremendous work/awesome WP template/webdesign’s schoolbook flowing !!
…very much looking forward to this development Mike.
I think the whole web is waiting for the sequel – I’m sure it will be awesome.
Good thing that there’s no pressure on me :)
I´m looking forward to see the theme!
What are your favourite plugins that are detected automagically?
Mine would be some kind of recent comment plugin, related posts, comment quicktags and favatars or gravatars.
And do not forget, all the world is using your theme nowadays so hardcoded language specific things (like in Kubrick 1) are a don’t ;-)
sounds good can’t wait to see it! thanks again for you hard work..
If it will be all–CSS.…what about us non–CSS enabled folk? How will it be customized? For example, say I want to edit the template, change background, add a banner….will it still come with a photoshop template or what?
Either than that we bask in your glory Oh Mastah! ;)
So Michael, Kubrick is no longer going to be upgraded?
Are you going to implement the amazon media manager in k2?
Thist would be great, cause I need this stuff ;-)
GFS
CarLBanks, Kubrick belongs to WordPress now. It’s halfway out of my hands.
Manji, it couldn’t be more simple – you just have to fire up wordpress administration, open up the presentation-page and then edit the theme. That way you can easily change any colors you like in the style sheet. :)
Im sure Michael will make the style sheet(s) for K2 more than readable and easy to understand, even if you’re not that used to CSS.
Michael, couldnt you do something like adding hooks into the theme, like its used in wp-core?
So plugin-devs like me can use those hooks in the template. That would be very appriciated :)
Now will K2 support the ability to have an image in the header?
Looking forward to it, Michael. I’ve been working on a theme based on the version that shipped with WP 1.5, but I may hold off a bit and wait for K2 to come out. :)
Very cool to see this piece of your life be donated to the community and the greater good of WordPress Michael. Very altruistic of you!
Thanks Michael for clearing that up. I’ll definately use K2 then when it comes out.
Congratulations on the progress, we were all waiting to hear the status of K2…
Can you be more specific about images and CSS… (i.e.: images used only as backgrounds in tags, or no images at all).
[pant, pant! gasp!]
I can’t wait for K2 – i just started blogging, went straight into using Kubrick. It’s definately going to be worth the wait, i’m really excited about your work.
Whatever you do make sure it is able to work in multiple languages out of the box. The current version of Kubrick needs a lot code changing to make work in Spanish and other languages. Also, the localization files since to make no effect on Kubrick. It would be great if you can make use the localization files so whatever language one chooses to publish Kubrick2 will accomodate.
I am sorry to sound so harsh. I mean if it is not too much asking that K2 be able to use localization out of the box. Since you do this out of love. I will send you a couple post cards from Central America. Good luck in your mission.
Can’t wait Michael, looks and sounds great!
Anxiously awaiting a sneak peak at what this will look like :-D
Michael,
I remember you posting a brief sample page or a link to one so we could gather some input on K2 (before it was known as K2) – what was that link again?
Regardless, your work with both Kubrick and Freya inspired much of my learning of CSS and WP all of which has been wrapped into a WP theme I titled Elvgren (recently produced for the WP Theme Competition). Without a doubt, it is not as tight or complete as your own designs, but at the very least, the results of my aspiration to produce such quality. Take a look at your earliest convenience.
Regards,
Denis
Michael,
Since your WP Themes (K and now K2) are so popular, could you please give some thought to support options? As of now, the only choices are the WP forums and the Kubrick Forum at Flickr. Neither is a great solution:
Both contain a ton of half-answers and out-of-date information. That’s the real kicker: Once WP set Kubrick as the out-of-the-box default theme, all of the pre-1.5 Kubrick discussion became moot. But, none of it has been removed, pruned, replaced, corrected, etc. It’s a mess.
I’ve been looking for a way to reduce the height of the header in Kubrick for weeks and have not yet found an answer. Nothing works right, everything works half-way. Could you at least consider extending/updating the FAQ of the Kubrick page?
Thanks. :)

I just installed Kubrick with Wordpres 1.5, and I think it looks great. I am super interested in K2, when is it out? No images and all css will be killer.
Thanks for the great dsesign for now!!
Matt
Nice! Just make sure you fix this too, Michael!
Great! Will be expecting this one! Fully CSS driven, chris J davis is going to like this!
