Sightseeing San Francisco

And so it came to pass that my pal Rasmus and I decided to shell out $225 a head for a rondtrip to San Francisco on tuesday (flying as a little over an hour; Greyhound is 7 hours). Going up in the morning, comin’ back in the evening. We do this not because we want to see ‘The Rock’ (though I suppose I’ll take a quick gander if we pass it), but because we have a unique opportunity to visit Pixar. And seriously, who wouldn’t want that?

Not us.

By the way, did you know Toy Story had its tenth anniversary just last week?

So anyway we’ll have a few hours in San Fran as well, and therefor I’d also love some pointers on what’s cool to look at; though keep in mind that we only have a few hours here and there.

Phew, my schedule next week is getting crazier and crazier!

  • This is getting old but here goes again:

    You lucky, lucky, lucky bastard!

    Bastard :D

  • :) I smile, to keep from crying.

  • Have a burrito (sounds weird, but just do it, trust me) at papalote (24th and valencia,) get an agua fresca de jamaica to drink.

Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge somewhat typical, but worthwhile.

don’t visit the haight (as in haight and ashbury) visit the lower haight as in haight and fillmore.

Go to Ocean Beach (if it’s clear, sunset is best)
if you have time, get out of the taxi at Stanyon and Haight and walk through the park to the sea. Bring the other half of your burrito with you.

    Things to pass on:
    Lombard Street
    Fisherman’s Warf
    Alcatraz

It’s my home town, where i currently live. i can’t imagine you’d like to have a coffee with me, but if you do let me know! I’d love to meet you, and drive you around.

What is that? Latin for wanting to get up your butthole? caugh ;-)

  • Gee, if only I was going to the states. I have never gone cross the atlantic, but I hope I will someday… I simply have to experience something bigger than Jutland, Denmark :D

    The place of boredom :-(

  • How much I love San Francisco…I’m green with envy :)

Anyway, I really enjoyed walking from Powell St. BART station to the Golden Gate Park passing through Haight.

And well, if you have a couple of minutes you might want to stop at the Apple Store… :D

  • Nice one man, and its pritty scary that Toy Story has been out 10 years already.. Really scary, actually whats worse is we are nearly haflway through the year already.

  • Go to the Meteron and maybe Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf. Don’t forget Alcatraz too! So pretty much what Fernando said.

Sidenote: (Wishes he had $360 to just spend like that.)

  • I’d say three things to see in SF if you only have one day with no night :

Start at Union Square (bars and shops all over)

Then head north to The Cannery/Fisherman’s Warf area (by the shore, nice little block with live Jazz Band nearly 24/7 (ok it’s more like 14/7 but what the hell) to get yourself a crepe) From there you got a view on GGB and Alcatraz, and you are next to the last northern pier. Going east get you to all those so typical neiborghood (Little Italy, Russian Hills, China Town)

Walking along the shore will bring you to Market Street (have a quick look at the Transamerica Tower, it’s funny) where all the day fuzz is (Apple Store mentionned earlier included)

Be sure to either get a rental car or some good healthy legs as the legend is true : streets of SF are (very) hard to handle sometime…

And if you need a guide, just let me know :)

  • Michael, I spent 4 weeks instead of my planned week in San Fran on my world trip back in 2003, I enjoyed it that much. Just walking around was fun enough, for me it is like an American version of Edinburgh – plenty of character, hills and culture.

I dont know where to recommend, but China Town, the MOMA and a Tram ride are all fun.

  • You can try around Van Ness, by city centre. There’s city Hall, an Asian Art Museum, Opera/Symphony house. Or can you head north on Van Ness by St. Mary’s Cathedral to see where the Pope stayed when he was here, and up past that to Japantown.

  • I don’t remember if you’re into comics or not. But either way you should bisit the planets coolest comicstore. Isotope Comics. http://www.isotopecomics.com/ It’s at Noriega Street. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1652+noriega+street+san+francisco&amp;hl=en Have fun, and ask James to show you his favourite Tiki-bars.

  • Christoffer,

actually, that was english for “I’m a fan of Michael’s, but he’s got fucking better things to do.”

Aren’t you a treat! Where’s your blog punk rock? I’m so there!!!

  • → The Presidio and/or Golden Gate Park
    → Japantown
→ Alcatraz Ferry (don’t get off, just go past it and under the Golden Gate) – this also gets you as close to Fisherman’s Wharf, etc. as you need to be.
→ Go get a bagel or something in Sausalito if you get a car – that and Muir Woods (think giant redwoods) are good excuses to cross the Golden Gate.

Walk as much as you can if you are in good shape – try Lombard Street on foot.

You know what? You need to be spending about a week to 10 days there, renting a car and driving up from LA up the coast, also seeing Monterey and heck, visit the wine country too.

    Magical place, San Fran.

  • Fernando:

Relax, I couldn’t resist messing with you. What you said sounded kind of gay and San Fransisco is the capital of gay people, correct? :)

  • TOY STORY WAS TEN YEARS AGO!!!???

Cor blimey guv’nor strike a light. That’s ages ago!

  • Yup. Ten years. They’re even releasing a 10th Anniversary Edition DVD. I wonder if it’s going to have more features that I don’t have in my Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box. It almost might be worth it just for the sneak peek at Cars.

  • San Fransisco is the capital of gay people, correct? :)

Talk about a cliché : Castro is nomore the Gay ghetto it used to be. Besides if any city in the world, Brussels or Amsterdam should be granted the Proud Capital of Gay World…

  • Ah the bay :)

Lucky git. I’ll be there in October, but my girlfriend is coming over here on tuesday! wheeee

See Pier 39, just for the utter cheeze of it, plug the view of the bay and Alcatrax is good from there, and the sea lions are fun (and honk a lot).

If you drive all the way out to near the coast and hospital there is the BEST Dim Sum place ever (and really cheap too…) the views of the coast are great. The best view of the whole Bay Area though is up from Grizzly Peak over on the Oakland side. I watched the sun go down there once, and I loved it.

I second the park too. Start out around by the hospital building (with the ENORMOUS saftey pin) and drive around from there. Or walk, its a nice walk. Good views of the bridge too.

Anyhow.. enough of that. Enjoy it you luck bastard, maybe one day we’ll cross paths ;)

  • Michael, just be sure and get a Burrito and see the beach, k?

We promise not to chase you around, try to kiss you, or pinch you either.

  • Cristoffer:

I can’t imagine you’d like to have a coffee with me, but if you do let me know! I’d love to meet you, and drive you around.

Dude, what’s your problem? If anyone’s going to be insulting, itI’ll be me pointing out the irritating noise that your site makes.

  • Mullet: Chill, like I said I was just messing with him. I couldn’t resist.

The content on that website is just a placeholder, it’s been like that for ages.
