Symphonic Hyperbole

So I’m looking at Symphony, a new CMS of sorts, and I almost choke on my own spit as I read their header. I’m sorry guys, but I’m going to have to call you on your hyperbole:

The biggest thing to hit web publishing since the keyboard

Bull. Shit.

Being a gamer, following the games industry, I’ve seen a fair amount of hyperbole (Daikatana, Duke Nukem Forever anyone?), and it never did any good to anyone. I don’t mean to pound on Twentyone Degrees… but I’m going to anyway. So I went to their site, where I found this little remark:

It will have a level of support never before seen for such an application.

Listen puppies, launch the product, let it do its thing. If you rock, the rockness of you and your product will turn people in much the same way as a vile virus unleashed by a secret government project turns people into brain-craving zombies.

Anyway, I’ve thought up a few new taglines for K2:

  • The biggest thing to hit you since your abusive parents.
  • The biggest thing to hit archeological diggings since sand…!?
  • The biggest thing to hit life, the universe and everything since the rise of molecular structures.

Feel free to throw in your own ideas.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, it’s a cool name for an app. Symphony. Nice.

  • I had a look at their demo site some time ago. And it looks really hot. But I am sure WP 1.6 + shuttle + K2 will kick ass ;-)

    • The biggest thing to hit the economy since George Bush

    Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

By the way, Michael is not responsible for what I’m writing here :)

  • I’m responsible. :)

K2, the biggest thing since the last biggest thing; but bigger.

  • Well the demos down at the moment so I’m only working off screenshots and the sales site design, but this reminds me a lot of SquareSpace.

  • Yeah, I had the same thought when I came across symphony a while back. Trying it out, it seems pretty good, but they’ve been launching it for-ev-er!!

Hmmm.. K2, the biggest thing to launch since Symphony. Wait a sec, did Symphony launch?

Ouch… I do like the name and the prodcut, all in good fun :-)

  • K2: The biggest and best thing since Sliced Bread, in fact we considered calling it Scliced Bread2 But that would only confuse people

  • The biggest thing since Life of Brian

  • Personally, I would’ve gone for the full monty and chosen something along the lines of: The biggest thing to hit web publishing since Tim Berners-Lee.

  • Hope it’s nothing like the Lotus Symphony software used to be like back on my old 8086 PC. That was a pile of cr@p.

  • See, silly me I thought the keyboard was around BEFORE web publising… guess I was wrong about that.

How about K2: Incorporating advances hitherto unknown in the field of blog themeing!

And 10 points to whoever can tell me what I am referencing above, and 10 extra points for telling me what movie the referenced movie was lampooned in.

  • K2: The biggest thing since the Spanish Inquisition!

  • K2: the biggest thing since the Big Bang.
K2: the biggest thing since the French revolution.

  • K2: When you have this what else do you need?

  • “Real artists ship.” —- Steve Jobs

  • The biggest thing to hit you since your abusive parents.

Please don’t write such things – I read this at work, and when I suddenly burst out laughing in the middle of my office people want to know why. And some of them just might not understand. :)

Going along with Chris’s comment, how about:

K2: The biggest thing to hit web publishing since the written word.

    Or even better:

K2: The biggest thing to hit web publishing since the printing press.

  • K2: The biggest thing to hit communication since the verbal conversation

  • Would love to see the demo but it’s down. The screenshots look nice but I need to play with it to see if it lives up to it’s hype. I did notice 1 thing. I don’t use IE and I’m grateful to have a Mac to be able to use Safari but it’s kinda a slap to IE users to say “screw IE”, fix your browser.

Why doesn’t Symphony support Internet Explorer?
Internet Explorer is filled with security problems and is not standards compliant. By supporting standards compliant browsers only, we can allow some funky stuff like the use of pseudo elements and attribute selectors to minimise on unnecessary and tags to save on file-size and also concentrate on proper, semantic code. Internet Explorer also doesn’t support PNGs, an open standard image format.
Please also note that only the User Interface of Symphony requires standards compliant browsers. The website you make with Symphony can support as many browsers you like and is entirely dependent on how you have made the template.

  • The funny thing about Hyping a product so cheezily like that is:
It usually is just that… Hype.
Big words for a product that isn’t out yet.

    Time will tell.

  • Yeah I noticed that, which lead me to this one:

The biggest thing to hit web publishing since the great IE / Netscape war.

  • K2 – The biggest thing since Everest.
    Uh, wait…that sucks.

K2 – Bigger than the mountain of mashed potatoes from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
    K2 – Twice as big as J1.
K2 – The tsunami of WordPress Mods.
    K2 – Bigger than Wonder Woman’s bra.
K2 – More staying power than Dirk Diggler.

I could go on, but alas, coffee break is over. :(

  • K2=42

  • K2 – The biggest thing since Everest!

  • I think the current one is quite funny. Why not keep that?
“K2. As energetic as Steve Balmer, just less bald.”

  • Nice one, Vincent.

  • K2, the biggest thing since the utterable grunt.

  • K2: Despite popular belief, it doesn’t love you.

  • The biggest thing to hit you since your abusive parents.

Gawd, I laughed so hard. Thanks for making my afternoon!

  • K2: The biggest thing since the big bang.

  • I’m sure they are happy to have your link even if it’s not a positive post.

  • K2, bigger than small.

  • “Personally, I would’ve gone for the full monty and chosen something along the lines of: The biggest thing to hit web publishing since Tim Berners-Lee.”

How about “The biggest thing to hit Web Publishing since Frontpage?”… or maybe not.

  • Has no one nicked John Lennon’s gem yet?

    “K2: Bigger Than Jesus.”

naturally, I am referring to Jesus, my 354-pound Columbian neighbor…

  • K2 –the biggest thing since K1.

As for Sympathy, or whatever it is called, it would seem they’ve gone the traditional marketing route – make it look good and make it sound important. Concierge – please… that sounds like a crock of crap.

Has anyone actually seen this thing in action? Are these guys walking the talk?

  • K2: Bigger than what’s in your pants.

  • k2 is like the best thing ever to hit the web, only, it has quality, and looks cool too.

  • K2, the biggest thing since Kangchenjunga

  • K2: The biggest thing to hit the fan.

But really symphony isn’t that bad, but it’s not great. The demo I got to use a few months back still had a looooooooong way to go.

  • K2 – The best thing to hit the web since the tag

  • The tag, dammit

  • K2. The biggest thing since boobs.

K2. Bigger than an Afrivan lowland gorilla!
    K2. Bigger than YOU!

  • K2. Bigger than Symphony ;-)

  • lol please…I read that and I too was quite amused. It’s funny as they are quite blatantly lying about their product, how can you ever prove that it would have the ‘greatest support’ and what have you…please K2 will kick you smelly ass. (+you have to pay!)

  • It might be good, but not as good as open source like Mango (or WP for that matter).

    K2. Way better than K1.
K2. Not yet as good as K3.
K2. Kaytoo, you figure it out.

  • K2: The Internet’s Andre The Giant.

  • Michael: Don’t get me started…!
In Korea K2 is only for old people!*

*An article back stated that only the elderly were
using email, younger audiences were into sms
and im’ing each other. You can guess the /. headline.
