2005 Ends

Well, I guess this is pretty much it. I’ve got a few hours until we head up to our neighbors for a good ol’ new years party, and with K2 Beta Two is out the door and not falling entirely apart, I figured I’d spend some of the time between now and then to just write the obligatory ‘the year that went’ entry.

K2 Beta Two

We won’t be able to deliver to you a 1.0 before the new year, as I had promised. But that’s okay, because I’m pretty proud of this Beta Two to be quite honest. It has seen some significant strides lately, and by and large I consider it a very stable product.

For Beta Two, there’s a new button in the options panel, which lets you quickly and easily set the options of Arnaud’s Extended Live Archives, try it out. Also, you’ll notice the inclusion of several Fam Fam Fam Silk Icons, which I personally love.

Chris went into some of the javascript files and bled them down to the bare essentials, and I finally got around to putting the ShowUtils and HideUtils functions into their own file (k2/js/k2functions.js). You may have noticed those two functions showing up in pingbacks and trackbacks all over the place; well that was my fault, and I’m really sorry. I hope Matt and the guys do something about it in Kubrick for 2.1.

There’s lots of other stuff as well, most of which you probably won’t notice, but trust us, it’s better.

If your favorite bug remains unfixed, head on over to the bug tracker and submit or resubmit a bug report, and you can be sure we’ll check it out. As usual, many tips and tricks can be found in the support forums, where you can also share your customizations and check out other people struttin’ their stuff. For a little taster, check out “Tauquil’s offering”:http://tauquil.com/.

So from Chris and I, a happy new year.

Revision 156

WordPress 2.0 This Week

Matt let the WP-Hackers mailing list know that WordPress 2.0 will be released:

Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the phase of the moon.

John Sinteur was kind enough to let us know that on wednesday this is how the moon will look, and on thursday, this is what we’ll get. Get your voodoo on and let us know what you think will happen.

Now, this means we’ll be rolling K2 over to 2.0-only this week. Feel free to stay with r125, which will be the last version for WordPress 1.5, but know that we won’t be updating it anymore. If you’re interested in being the guy or gal who keeps a 1.5 version up-to-date, then let us know, otherwise it’ll stay the way it is.

Update: Core support people have requested a delay until after Christmas in order to prepare upgrade documentation and enjoy the holidays a bit before the release.

This, combined with the fact I haven’t got the changes to wordpress.org ready, is pretty compelling, so the release is currently planned for the 26th of December.

King Kong Review

King Kong

There is room for concern when one faces the prospect of watching a 3 hours and 7 minutes film about an overgrown monkey. Yes, haha, it’s an easy joke, but seriously, even fanboys like me have to leave a little room for concern, especially since it’s a remake of a 72-year-old black and white film, which I’ve personally never seen, but which has King Kong look more like a stop-motion novelty, a relic from a long gone past, than a movie monster icon.

Add to that the fragile legacy of having done something as staggering as The Lord of the Rings, it is hard to not be a little concerned that the facade would crack and show the real face of the Peter Jackson underneath, wallowing in his own newfound idolism, churning out Warner-length vanity pieces; remakes of his favorite films… Hmm.

Thankfully, Kong marks the return of the king (haha).

Lucasarts, DroidMaker, Sam & Max

Michael Rubin has written, and is currently touring with, a book on George Lucas and the Digital Revolution, called DroidMaker. This is interesting enough for me as it is, but the great thing about it, is how you can download chapter 1 and 18 off of his blog. This is interesting because chapter 18 deals with the creation of the Games Group, later to become Lucasarts Entertainment.

And that is interesting because they remain, dispite many quite ‘bleh’ titles, one of the most significant game companies in the world.

And while you ponder that, you can check out some of this cool Sam & Max swag (I will kill for those two prints. Kill I tell you!).
