Blade Runner Final Cut

Blade Runner is possibly the best movie ever made. Period. Rikke and I were recently lucky enough to catch a theater showing of the Director’s Cut in Cinemateket, which was pure pleasure, even the parts I slept though… Ehm… It was late, okay?:”(Cinemateket is having a large showing of Roger Corman movies in June, in case you like me enjoy yourself a bit of movie history, like Death Race 2000)”:.

The reason I’m mentioning this, is that after literally years of waiting, rumors going this way and that, the Blade Runner Final Cut DVD has finally found its way out of the legal hellhole it’s been living in, and is making its way to stores in September 2007! But that’s not all:

“Blade Runner: Final Cut” will arrive in 2007 for a limited 25th anniversary theatrical run, followed by a special edition DVD with the three previous versions offered as alternate viewing: Besides the original theatrical version and director’s cut, the expanded international theatrical cut will be included. The set will also contain additional bonus materials. “#”:http://comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14724

This is great news indeed! Finally this, one of the very cornerstones of modern cinema, will gets its due. It breaks my heart to see movies like Pearl Harbor get the full treatment while Blade Runner and 2001 are allowed to be released in sub-par DVD versions that don’t do them proper justice.

By the way, if one was so inclined, one might be able to procure a HD version of Blade Runner off of UseNet. Just sayin’.

  • Awesome news, and about fucking time as well D:

Currently downloading a 18GB HD version off the newsgroups too, hopefully there wont be any chinese subtitles this time :)

  • That’s really great news. Although in a small sence I have to disagree with you. 2001 did actually sell in a quite good package a while back, boxed with the soundtrack, a small book and a pictureframe from the movie. Limited Edition of course, but still a really good box.

Now, if I could only convince my girlfriend that we need to take the train over to Copenhagen to see Deathrace 2000. Got to love that Frankenstein. :-)

  • You can imagine how I feel, I was a kid when the movie came out and it completely blew me away, even to this date it remains a major creative influence on me. I still have my Blade Runner Fan Club membership card and souvenir “making of” magazine…lol. After years of reading about this DVD ( and it’s theatrical re-release ), it’s finally happening and I couldn’t be happier.

  • That’s awesome news. Last time I got Blade Runner it was the edited down US version dvd that skips a lot, it’ll be nice to see all the versions.

  • Hmmm, your post and the news article you’ve quoted are both a bit ambiguous. Just to clarify, the DVD being released in September isn’t the Final Cut, but the 1992 Director’s Cut. The reason it only has a four month release window is because the same version is one of the four versions viewable on the Final Cut DVD release.

Apparently the bonus features will be different on the two releases so the double dipping will still have some value for fans.

  • Bennet, yeah you’re right, I was a bit eager there :|

  • I watched Blade Runner in a Philosophy class a few years back, and interestingly enough, I fell asleep too. Maybe it’s not just you?
