Battlestar Exodus

Like Khaled and Matt (spoilers galore, stand clear!), I guess I really should also chime in with some praise for the fourth episode of Battlestar Galactica of this, the third season. Spoilers ohoy!

While I was very surprised that they didn’t milk New Caprica for more story (budgetary restraints and the like), there is one single scene in the fourth episode, which more than makes up for it all. I’ve got some friends who are bound to read this (shu!), but for those of you who’ve seen it, you know the one I’m talking about.

How they manage to make it all work, while constantly veering the chasm of ‘rushedness’ is something of a feat really. Because in all honesty, the show often feels like it could’ve used some more time before and during production (I’ve got no beef with their post-production work). But they always manage to pull it together and really get me. Despite the fact, that when I look at series like Lost (which I also love, love, love), it’s clear that they are much more in control of things.

But yeah, I would’ve preferred the occupation and resistance of New Caprica to have lasted at least half a season. Or at least 6 episodes, so we could really get a sense of the troubles they were going through. It seems like such a waste to have the series take a drastic turn like the ending of season 2, only to see an almost complete reset within the first four episode of the new season. Obviously there’ll be a lot of residual stuff from New Caprica in this season, but still…

All said and done, I’m still head over heels for BSG.

  • Defiantly one of the best episodes this season, possibly any season! I just can’t get enough of this show!

  • They did kind of cover what the people of New Caprica went through in the “webisodes” posted on scifi.com.

  • Yeah, but they were a bit ‘meh’, don’t you think?

  • I assume, if I haven’t seen the show before, I should start from the beginning of Season 1? Any recommendations other than that?

  • I was SO glad to see them get off New Caprica. I liked this story arc even less than the Pegasus crap.

I loved the Battlestar drop scene in this episode!

  • Kyle, you’d want to start with the mini series before you move on to the first season,

Trey, don’t you think it’s time you looked around for something else?

  • I just started watching Battlestar Galactica a few days ago. I’m already playing catch up on like, 9 seasons of Stargate SG-1, so I had no desire to go back and get seasons 1 and 2 of Battlestar. So, I watched The Story so Far (free from iTunes), along with reading some of the primers and character info on the site. I grabbed the first four episodes of season 3 (which I’d missed) and have watched all of those. (I just watched Exodus, part 2 earlier today, actually…)

I’m sure I missed some awesome plot lines from seasons 1 and 2, but I just didn’t want to set myself up with such a backlog to watch. I can say though, that after watching The Story so Far, a little reading, and watching the first four episodes of season 3, I’m not lost at all. I know what’s going on, and I’m quickly getting a sense of the characters, so I’m happy. Kickass show.

  • Trey, don’t you think it’s time you looked around for something else?

    Pardon?

  • Well, if you didn’t like the Pegasus storyline, which lasted half of season 2 and you didn’t like New Caprica, which has lasted 4 episodes of this season, you don’t sound happy with BSG generally :)

  • I think it was a good ep and well, imo, this “reset” was being needed. I also thought that it was kinda rushed but the scene of Galactica making planetfall and then jumping after deploying the vipers, it was awesome and makes up for everything :D

One thing i want to see is how Galactica will reorganize itself, now we have Adama, Lee, Starbuck, Tigh(seems he wont be doing anymore service and back to Ambrosia :P), Chief, etc back on board. That’s besides ALL the current crew.

    SPOILER!!!!!!!!
I had read somewhere, i think it was an interview from one of the actors, that they were going to take the fight to the Cylon homeworld. I wonder if this has anything to do with Hera ? :)

  • I was very happy that they got off New Caprica myself. I love the space chase episodes that fill up the bulk of season one and two. I was also finding it really painful to watch Starbuck cooped up and being brainwashed for all of season 3. She needs to be in the cockpit killing. Although I did love seeing her kill that skin-job over and over. Adds a new dynamic to the whole princess in the tower cliche.

    Spolier
Anyone else think that Ellen Tigh is just asleep? And she’ll wake up on New Caprica and be a stupid pain in the ass for the rest of season 3?

  • Problem with them being on space again is that we might get some episodes like that “slave trading” one in season 2 = OMG BAD! :(

About Ellen, hopefully not. Not that i dislike(d) her character but that would make no sense at all.

  • Well, if you didn’t like the Pegasus storyline, which lasted half of season 2 and you didn’t like New Caprica, which has lasted 4 episodes of this season, you don’t sound happy with BSG generally :)

Good point, but the bits that I did like, I liked a lot! ;)
