Flickr Merges With Yahoo! ID

Now I loves me some Flickr; really, I do. But today was a day I had rued for a long time. Today was the day Flickr decided to have all the old members merge their accounts with the Yahoo! ID system.

Like both Owen and Bryan, I don’t care much for this. First of all I can’t get ‘Heilemann’ as a Yahoo ID, since it’s already taken, so I have to fall back on another ID I made back when the dinosaurs walked the earth or make a new one. I know, it seems like a small thing, but that sensation of having been an early adopter of Flickr seems to have been stamped away with this merger…

Jef Raskin’s Enso

A couple of years ago, by way of Brian (who seems to always be reading some great books), I read the phenomenal, The Humane Interface by the late, great Jef Raskin, one of the creators of the Apple Macintosh. It is a absolutely wonderful book, and for anyone meddling with user interface design it is a must read.

One of the things the book dealt with, which I at first had a bit of trouble getting my head around, was a suggested method of operating the computer through quickly written commands. One of the examples from the book was, say you’re writing something and you need to do a quick calculation on a few numbers. On most normal OS’s today you need to switch out of the application you’re working in (unless of course you do most of your work in a calculator application, in which case this does not apply to your… you loon!). But with the system Raskin suggested, you would hit a ‘command key’, write for instance CAL and then the calculation and finally press enter. Voila, the calculation would be inserted right where you need it. A small example of course; wait for it.

Disabling ‘Snap Preview’

Thank you Kottke (and in turn Gruber) for showing everyone how to disable the ‘Snap Preview’s that have been popping up everywhere.

Update: Jeremy has a good entry summing up some of my own thoughts and providing some stuff I hadn’t seen before as well.

The Secret Life of Brian

Via Morten, The Secret Life of Brian. On how one of the greatest — and most insightful — comedies of all time, shook the religious world.

Aliens vs. Predator

Well, I think they got that right at least. Thanks I am Adam.

Lego Starships

Oh my deity. Check out these two (one, two) Lego starships! Makes me want to play with lego again!

Clutter Free WordPress Write Page

Several people have been asking how I got my write page to be so clutter free… Well, there you have it.

K2 0.95 RC1 Released

Yup, get it here.

Semantics 101

Now I don’t personally use the visual editor in WordPress. I like me some Textile and control. But it is in there, and I think non-tech users are better off overall because of it.

And now with WordPress 2.1, you can even switch between WYSIWYG and code views. Great!

Yeah, well it is great, but what in the hell is going on with those buttons?!

Habari Media Manager Sketch

Alright, I wasn’t planning on posting this just yet, but since I won’t have proper time to work on it for the next few days, my lack of patience got the better of me.

Now it is important to note that this isn’t even a mockup as much as it is a sketch (albeit rather a polished one). There is some functionality missing and so on and so forth.

Welcome WordPress 2.1

A big congratulations to Matt and company with the release of WordPress 2.1. I’m uploading it to the site as I’m writing this.

K2 is right behind it, and will see a new release as soon as humanly possible. I’m extremely busy this week, but I’ll see if I can’t slot it in somewhere later today so you have something new and shiny to play with.

WordPress 2.1 actually contains a couple of things that are of interest to K2, such as the inclusion of the Prototype and Scriptaculous javascript libraries directly in the core. And while it doesn’t look like WP gzip’s its JS libraries, it nonetheless is great for us to be able to rely on WP’s inclusion of those libraries, rather than shipping them with K2.

Also there is some interesting new header stuff, which should also make for some new niceties.

Today also sees the release of the 2.0 version of Akismet, a plugin that has done more for the world of blogging than any other plugin.

Never too Cold to Run

Bjørn made it abundantly clear to me, when I first asked for advice on me starting to run, to never allow for excuses. But to just get up, get dressed and get a’runnin’. And it occurred to me, that once you accept that as your new reality, it’s no longer a problem if it’s raining or snowing or windy or whatever other kind of weather patterns nature throws at you. At least it hasn’t been so far…

Now I’m of course a measly a beginner, but even if I was seasoned, would I be able to run in –25C? This guy lives in Canada, and he does!… Now watch him strip explain his clothes in front of the camera.

This originated from booya, in a discussion in the Binary Bonsai Zero2Hero Locker Room, on running in cold conditions.

Prototype 1.5 Released

Yeah, so I’m still at home, eating oat meal and yoghurt very slowly. Very carefully. Which by the way, for those of you keeping track, means I missed out on the burgers at work today. Which sucks, because they are legendary burgers. And free.

Anyway, it does give me an opportunity to mindlessly check my feeds when I’m not feeding myself with painkillers. And as luck would have it, Prototype 1.5 was released today, complete with a new site and brand-spanking new documentation! Shiny!

I’ve already updated our K2 SVN repository, which by the way is as near as I can tell ready for the imminent release of WordPress 2.1.

501st Legion Out In Force

Be sure to check out these photos of the 501st legion — literally hundreds of stormtroopers — parading with George Lucas at the Rose Parade. Yahoo also has some really great shots! (Be sure to check out the slideshow, which is in the sidebar. I would link to it, but someone thought it would be a good idea to have it open in its own little window… Which in turn will be taken over if you click a video link somewhere in Yahoo News; only the window isn’t large enough to hold the video player, so the content is cropped… Wow, nice going Yahoo designers. Good job!).
