Welcome WordPress 2.1

A big congratulations to Matt and company with the release of WordPress 2.1. I’m uploading it to the site as I’m writing this.

K2 is right behind it, and will see a new release as soon as humanly possible. I’m extremely busy this week, but I’ll see if I can’t slot it in somewhere later today so you have something new and shiny to play with.

WordPress 2.1 actually contains a couple of things that are of interest to K2, such as the inclusion of the Prototype and Scriptaculous javascript libraries directly in the core. And while it doesn’t look like WP gzip’s its JS libraries, it nonetheless is great for us to be able to rely on WP’s inclusion of those libraries, rather than shipping them with K2.

Also there is some interesting new header stuff, which should also make for some new niceties.

Today also sees the release of the 2.0 version of Akismet, a plugin that has done more for the world of blogging than any other plugin.

  • Nice, thanks for the heads up.

I’ll be waiting for the compatible K2 version before i install 2.1 :)

  • Sweet – Is there anywhere to test 2.1?

  • I downloaded the package last night and i’ll be uploading to a test environment today… i can’t wait to play with it!

  • Our new tabbed editor allows you to switch between WYSIWYG and code editing instantly while writing a post.

Wow, it seems they’re finally implement part of our Shuttle work the way we wanted it:

I remember the controversy when we first discussed WYSIWYG in WordPress. I remember being adamant that either we could switch between the two easily and quickly, or it shouldn’t be added.

  • I don’t get the hype about Akismet, SpamKarma (http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/) has been very successful and working for much longer than Akismet is around, hasn’t it?

    Choice rules ;)

  • Joen, I know exactly what you mean. BUT , they’re using buttons for switching between the two!… I’ll throw up a screenshot from Safari (which doesn’t style buttons) later today…

  • Since i’ve changed K2 to suit my needs, i don’t want to use another theme and i don’t want a inconsistent system so i’m waiting for a new and compatible K2 version. :)
    Thx for the work anyway!

    Omg, just can’t await a working wp2.1 with K2… :D

Yeah, but none of the spam countermeasure plugins I’ve tried on my blog have worked nearly as well as Akismet. And while the other plugins are option heavy, Akismet doesn’t have any options, which I love!

  • I’ll second the Akismet rave – I tried just about everything on the market and got somewhere between 80 – 90% effectiveness, which was good, but not great. Since I put Akismet on my system, I can count the number of spam that have slipped through on one hand, and there have been no false positives. There’s no other way to put it: Akismet just works, flawlessly, and effortlessly.

  • …seeing Prototype used in so many frameworks… and thinking that’s simple WRONG… it seems Java ingegneristic heavy approach applied into the javaScript light universe… jQuery is “the JS way” in my opinion (I’m not the only one, but it’s still an opinion).

    I’m a bit sad… Rails before… K2… now WP2.1… :(

  • Well, if it’s any consolation to you, I didn’t know of JQuery before I joined Habari (which is using JQuery). If I had, perhaps K2 would have used it.

  • jQuery wasn’t around the Ajax stuff started being worked on K2.

  • I know, K2 has very good reasons. Rails too.
    Also jQuery until 1.0 wasn’t very mature…

But yes, it’s a consolation: I’m looking forward Habari and knowing that it uses jQuery is a huge one. :)

  • Thanks for the comments on WP and Akismet, I really appreciate it.

Joen and Michael, sorry about the button thing in Safari, we’ll fix that up in the next release. Andy did the tabbing and it was pretty darn tricky, because you want the code view to be equivalent to having the WYSIWYG off, which requires some text massaging. I’d also like for the tabs to be sticky so whichever you choose will be selected when you come back. Joen you’ll also note that your request that tabs look more like tabs has also been heard. :) Everything is still far too complex though, much farther to go still.

Indeed, I’m finding it to be working very well. Props on that.

When you add this feature, I think I’ll actually turn on WYSIWYG! At that point, you might even want to add WYSIWYG for commenters…?

I did in fact notice that, and I’m very pleased. The WordPress 2.1 admin interface is what 2.0 should’ve been, and a definite improvement. Keep working in that direction and I’ll keep my thumbs up.
