Lost Drops in Ratings

Lost has endured a rocky road in its third season. The season-three premiere was down 20 percent from season two’s premiere, and Media Life Magazine suggests today that “the most likely reason [for the ratings dip] is that fans are dissatisfied with the drama’s dragging plotlines. Message boards are full of complaints about producers’ failure to tie up almost any of the mysteries on the show, instead adding new ones as well as new characters.” #

It’s funny, because I don’t feel the third season is less interesting because of its lack of answer, but rather because of its lack of truly huge new mysteries! Lost has never given any answers, and I don’t expect it to any time soon either.

What I’ve been missing after the hiatus has been contact with more of the survivors. I can only guess that they are off finishing other commitments and that’s why the show has been deftly avoiding their participation by secluding Jack, Kate and Sawyer for most of the second part of season three.

One thing that does annoy me though, is the lack of confrontations between the survivors and the others. I mean these people have kidnapped children, kept people captive and all kinds of other nonsense. And all the while they are keeping everyone in the dark about what is really going on. Why?

More pertinently, why aren’t the survivors asking these questions?

Anyway, I’m still on Lost (and Heroes and Entourage and a bit of Battlestar, although that is severely slipping in my ratings system).

  • I feel the same way about Lost as you do. Where is the confrontation with the others? They frakkin’ live on the same island? And all they do is live on a beach, fishing. They don’t even want to drive ? :)
And on BSG: read this, there’s still hope lol.

  • I can’t remember where I was reading it (and my RSS reader’s search function is being spectacularly unhelpful here), but there was an article on the interpod last week about how it’s possible to at least partly explain the massive drop in Lost’s TV viewing figures by the massive jump in Lost’s internet viewing figures – apparently, a huge number of people have been downloading the episodes from iTunes and this may or may not account for the missing TV viewers.

    Ahem.

Also, for the record, this week’s episode of Lost (S03E10) was the best in a long time. I actually got a tear in my eye. If they can keep that up, I’ll be happy.

  • I don’t look forward to each new episode of Lost like I used to. The last episode really didn’t add anything to the story for me. Apart from seeing Cheech Marin of course.

Heroes on the other hand has me chomping at the bit for each episode. I really love the way the story is unfolding.

  • And I thought the first season sucked due to the lack of answers. :) I’m glad I stopped watching. Tension is an art, but stalling is just boring. It was quite interesting to begin with though.

  • I think the makers of LOST have me hooked no matter what they do. I’ll be watching in Season 7 when none of the original characters are actually still there, but their children are now trying to get off the island

  • It’s funny but I’ve been watching the new season of Lost with more interest than I have the later part of BSG. I think it’s got something to do with where we are in terms of the seasons themselves, ie BSG is ebbing closer to the end, which is why they’ve had a few filler episodes. They’ve not been awful, but not great by any stretch of the imagination.

I’ve been watching Prison Break, and while it’s been pretty brilliant so far it to has lost the sheer amount of power of the first season and a half. The end of the seasons seems to be a place to run out of steam.

I’ve downloaded the first 12 episodes of Heroes, but to be honest it’s just not as good as either Lost or BSG or Prison Break. If it had come out a couple of years ago it would be a fave but right now it’s only good when I’ve got nothing better to watch (or I’ve finished watching all of the other shows).

I’ve heard good things about Entourage, any good Mike?

  • I think season one was the best. The show was new, we didn’t knew the characters, every episodes had me wanting to watch the second one (on the DVD the experience is better). Since the pilot the shows had a great tention and the mysterie sourrounding the Island was something really cool. The second season was good too, we learned more about the survivors with the flashbacks and again, more mysteries, more tention.

Sadly, season 3 was different and I can only talk about what we’ve seen to date (10 episodes, half a season). I think why it was “different” was because of the Others. Every episode was on the Others Island and they negleted the rest of the survivors. I was getting tired of the Others at some point because they never revealed what was going on. They never said, exept for Jack, you are here because of *whatever. So I felt like all of this was for nothing.

I think Lost is a good show but not a 9 seasons show, they must reveal something. I’m not saying it must end at season 3, but you know, season four should be the last.

  • Yes, Entourage is great. We downed the two and a half seasons that are out there in less than a week.

  • I tried watching Lost quite a few times in the past and it really didn’t stick with me much. My interest always waned when stuff kept on happening and none of it was ever explained. Then more mysteries piled up and soon it was just a confusing mess to me. Not overly enjoyable.

I just started watching Heroes from the start this past week and am thoroughly enjoying it. The plot seems to be moving along nicely (I just finished episode 8) and the characters are pretty good; sometimes it’s a little cheesy, but I’m pretty hooked.

As for Entourage; well, what can I say. I can’t wait until April or whenever it’s coming back on the air. Ari BETTER be there still. The show makes me wish I were in Cali instead of Canada…

  • Entourage is awesome!

    That will be all ;)

  • My interest in lost is waning. I am amoung those who are tired of all the open questions. I still watch, but I’m only truly excited about Hero’s now.

  • Lost has lost. Dexter, Heroes, House, Boston Legal, Prison Break, 24, BSG (although it is getting increasingly annoying the last episodes) and the last season of Rome, hell even Veronica Mars is more fun to watch than Lost. So why watch Lost… there no longer is any reason to except for your satisfaction to “see it through to the bitter end” and I have been noting as much when season three started and again after the hiatus. Now lets kill Charlie already shall we?

  • Jeez, there’s a lot of Lost hatred around these here parts…

I don’t really get it, I must say. Lost still kicks all the other shows in terms of production quality, actor performances and cleverness.

And even if there has been a stretch where it hasn’t been quite as captivating as it was in the first two seasons, it is still better than 99% of the crap out there.

  • The problem with Lost, is in my opinion, that they leave everything open… all they ever do is create more questions. And the whole thing develops sooo slowly.
Battlestar started at new times (late at night) this season, so I missed a few episodes, but since we got the DVR I guess I can start recording it and watch it later.
Thanks to the DVR I get to watch both 24 and Heroes which both airs at the same time…

    I also enjoy watching House….

  • it is interesting how everyone misses this simple basic, and ultimate fact:
lost stopped beeing interesting, when a whole civilization was discovered.
There are people (others) living in an another island right next to theirs, with boats, guns, and an underground base. So long for the “mysterious isolated island” main plot.

this mistake is “irreversible”. so the writters try desperately to recover the loss with new branches of misteries and new characters, but they lack the creativity.

The side stories, why people get healed? how the dude can see the future? What the polar bear is doing there? what is the magnetic base doing there? who sent the food? What are the numbers? who are the others? how come they still look as the first day they arrived at the island? why people are so shy to share discoveries? (it take them 3 episodes to even tell another that they find a banana) (specialy locke finding the hatch and keeping it for himsel was the peek of nonsense on that point). What is the magnetic Cloud attacking anyone? and more and more questions. None answered. but the worst is that even if u get one, it will still be boring, so cancel lost and watch…

    …heroes!

    ;-)
