Reboot 9.0

I’m not at reboot this year (too busy), but as always, follow it via the reboot9 tag (Flickr and Technorati).

I want one… if it runs OS X that is (thanks Joen).

Salivant Words: A Journalist’s Admiration

I like nice words, and I couldn’t help reprinting this sentence:

Perhaps no journalist is so admired by his peers, in part because he has actually pulled off the life we imagined our profession would afford. Dashing off 1,000 ‘pater le bourgeois words before a two-bottle lunch, blagging through war-zone checkpoints, starry parties, whisky-fuelled late-night geo-politics and crackling media feuds. Yet as most of hackdom has knuckled down to colourless, desk-bound sobriety, there is Hitchens, still larging it, a 3-D cartoon of what we might all have been, given his ego and intellect, his brass neck and neoprene liver. #

And of course this snippet:

But Hitchens is never far below boiling point. He is an evangelical secularist, an atheist warlord.

Nice.

I would love to just quote the entire thing verbatim, as it is a great piece of writing. At least if you happen to be an evangelical secularist. If on the other hand you find yourself on the side that believes in the great-eye-in-the-sky… not so much.

Look Ma’, I’m on Wired!

Not that I thought I had a chance, what with all the real fanatics out there (ahem), but I submitted a childhood photo of me posing behind my precious Star Wars figures to the Wired ‘Fandom Fever’ group on Flickr, as part of their Star Wars anniversary line-up (which is mostly older stuff unfortunately).

Anyway, thanks to some slim pickings, there I am, on Wired.com.

Star Wars Celebration Begins

The 30th anniversary of Star Wars is tomorrow, Friday the 25th of May. I’m bogged down in work, family responsibilities and K2ness, so I’m afraid I haven’t been able to deliver quite the ode to Star Wars I would have liked to, nor even sit down with some popcorn and A New Hope. Sorry for that; more for myself than for you.

But, what I can do though, is point you to some pretty cool things that are going on just now, in relation to Star Wars, and then hope against hope that I will have the time to write my appreciation piece as soon as possible. Most notably, you should check out the Lucas Online Celebration IV Blog as well as the accompanying Flickr stream which has some damn nice artful Vader helmets right now (some more shots of those, as done by The Vader Project).

Wired, which is quite Star Wars-centric when it comes down to it, has posted (and will be posting I think) several pieces. A look at Steve Sansweet’s comprehensive Star Wars collection, a look at the psychology of Anakin Skywalker, a word about 5 – 25-77, a documentary about ‘the first time’ and finally words from a guy who watches Star Wars for the first time ever (and has a few harsh words to throw its way, even if he does get Lucas’ best film wrong; if it isn’t Star Wars, it’s THX 1138, no competition :)).

And as a small bonus, I thought these papercraft AT-AT’s were pretty nice as well, even though I’m sick and tired of the papercraft this-and-that wave

PS: Yes, there is a European Celebration being held in London in mid-July! When is that Metallica concert I’m going to? Oh, that’s right, in mid-July… DOH!

PPS: If you come across some nice pieces, or if you write one yourself, let me know.

Update: I’m going to add stuff here as I come across it.

Remove The Annoying Technorati Ticker

So Technorati redesigned recently. Generally speaking I’m not much of a fan of the candy-drop look, but I in particular cannot fathom why they would add a ticker, which inelegantly flickers across the top of the site, displaying tags (such as, and I quote: “free porn”).

Very helpful… No wait, that other thing… Yes.

I too thought we killed the Marquee tag, and no I don’t generally have much use for Technorati, but when I do finally go there I don’t want to be distracted by a damn ticker! So I threw together a very simple stylesheet and put it on userstyles.org, which, if you’ve got Stylish extension or Greasemonkey installed, you can go right ahead and install without a hitch.

Go get it now.

Entourage, Heroes and Lost

Warning: If you follow Heroes, Entourage or Lost and you aren’t up to date, turn around and go about your business, because here be spoilers.

Lucas in Love

It’s Star Wars week. I’m damn busy, but I’ll do my best to work up to the 30th anniversary of Star Wars on May 25th. For now, here’s Lucas in Love, for those of you who have still to catch it.

PS: Wired has a flickr group where you can add Star Wars-centric photos, which will be used on friday at Wired’s celebration of the anniversary.

Sarah Connor & Rambo Trailers

Alright, just got back from a wedding back in Jutland to find the trailer for Rambo IV and The Sarah Conner Chronicles online. And wow, I’ve got to admit, Rambo sort of caught me off guard there! That thing is _blooo-oody!_Could be good, unless they spent all their money shot on the trailer. Personally, I think it’ll be quite entertaining, and that’s about it.

As for The Sarah Conner Chronicles… What was that about? Now a) I’m biased to not liking it and b) It’s a trailer for a TV show, which isn’t the easiest thing to do. But not only did the story look altogether meh, the casting just looks to be downright horrid. Let me see, Sarah Connor looks like a housewife, John Connor is a pretty-boy with no edge (picture him cruising hazardously through traffic on an off-roader with GnR blasting from the ghettoblaster… No? Didn’t think so) and the Terminator? Could he look more bland?

And not bland in the ‘Lance Henriksen blending into crowds and looking fucked up creepy’ kinda way, just ‘who is that again?’-bland.

Gah!

All things considered, I do think a TV show could be fashioned around the Terminator franchise; there’s a lot of cool stuff that could be done, especially in todays TV market. But this just looks like a dud to me.

And seriously, stop trying to gain the favor of fans by reiterating lines from the first two movies. Cameron got away with it, but Mostow’s sorry attempt to sidestep it in a humorous way (“She’ll be back” and “I’m back”) was neigh catastrophic, and so I predict will this be.

But then, I’m getting old and grumpy.

PS: The Transformers trailer looks… pretty good :) — I rest easy in not having to hate on Michael Bay, and simply sit down, shut up and enjoy some big explosions; and the Transformers trailer promises that much.

Details on Blade Runner: The Ultimate Collection

It would seem that details about the Blade Runner Ultimate Collection DVD have leaked online, and it sounds… pretty good. Pretty good indeed. I’m copying the specs whole-sale, since the details have since vanished from Australian retailer EzyDVD.

Rikke Turns XX

Congratulations with your XXth birthday Rikke. I know you wanted girlie things, but I kinda went and wished a flickr interface for MacFUSE on your behalf; sorry :P

THE Death Star? Dude!

How does the original Death Star model from Star Wars, in the 80’s, end up in some random guy’s parents basement in Missouri Ozarks. Funny you should ask, because that random guy is currently posting his multi-part story on his website.

Script Frenzy

Any of you, my dear readers, considering participation in Script Frenzy (churn out a script in 30 days flat, warts and all)?

I’m considering it, but I’m afraid I’ll be way too busy with work to get into it properly.

Pro Korean Gamers Score Big Time

“I want to be rich,” he says simply, and that may not be idle talk: Gamers at Choi’s level of skill can earn several hundred thousand dollars a year off their joysticks and the adulation of the nation’s twenty– and thirty somethings, especially young women. Here, gaming isn’t regarded as a geeky pastime, and the sport has a substantial following, even fan clubs, which ensure celebrity status for its champions as any other top athlete. #

Am I on the wrong side of the production pipeline?!

MacFUSE for Flickr?

Dear Lazyweb,

Tomorrow is Rikke’s birthday, and there is nothing she would want more in the world, than to have a mechanism for flickr similar to the one demonstrated for Picasa in this video of MacFUSE. Thank you.

PS: The author of this blog may or may not be projecting his own wants onto his girlfriend in hopes of some birthday sympathy.

Twitter

Like the blogosphere isn’t ripe enough with Twitter-talk; I’ve recently restarted updating my Twitter account, mostly thanks to Twitterfic.

It’s Called a Spoiler Warning

I’m not going to link to it, but if you’re following Soprano’s and you haven’t seen last nights episode, you might want to not read Cinematical today, where they pretty much spoil the shit out of it. Thanks a lot.

Update: It’s changed now, though it still carries a picture which will hint at the spoiler…

Trent Reznor says: “Labels Cause The Piracy”

As the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more. #

He then goes on to exemplify this with the pricing of his own Year Zero album.

What I’m Reading

I’m one of those people who is always reading at least 5 – 6 books at any given time. Right now I’m up to about twice that. Here’s what’s on the horizon (with notes on flickr):
