RIP FASA

I ended up marrying the less adventurous Cyperpunk 2020, sure (only to divorce her for Heavy Gear). But don’t think I ever forgot the wild nights we had together, running in the shadows. We had some great times. We were young, vigorous, stupid. You taught me things like… Never trust a dragon. Don’t hit the Matrix — yeah, you got there first — unless you want the rest of your party to retire to the TV room and watch Robocop.

And it always, always comes down to superior firepower, and not that magic mumbojumbo shaman bullshit.

It’s been a long time coming. You’ve not been yourself for years, but I guess today it is definitive. And well, supposedly now is as good a time as any to have my nativity cut down to size and my sorry ass, grown into adulthood. But man… We had some times.

Farewell FASA Corporation.

  • I was so disappointed when I learned the new Shadowrun game was not an RPG. I miss that damn SNES Shadowrun — even with all the horrible glitches and drawbacks.

  • Still Shadowrun is such a great rpg. Like you I had a great time running the shadows back in the days but work and adulthood somehow prevent me from picking up my books and start playing again. Rumours has it that the new 4th edition of the game is supposed to have some cool new rule system and stuff but I doubt it will have the same quality as the old FASA system.

  • I’m in mourning.. no, really.

FASA helped me enter the PC RPG world; they clothed me, kept me warm and taught me right from wrong.

  • Shit. No, honestly: shit.

FASA was a huge part of my youth. Earthdawn, Battletech, Shadowrun. These universes meant a lot to me. I grew up. And I understand they had to change to survive, but now they’re just… gone. And everything that’s left to remember them by has nothing at all to do with what I grew up with.

    That just sucks.

  • FASA Corporation has been dead for years [they stopped publishing in early 2001], but the great games and universes it made are hardly gone … the “low-fi” versions of Classic BattleTech and Shadowrun are being published by Catalyst Game Labs, and Earthdawn by RedBrick Ltd. Microsoft still has the rights to the electronic versions of the properties, and I can’t imagine that they won’t either develop new games for them at one of their other design houses, or sublicense them to someone else.

  • Yeah, because Shadowrun for the 360 is so faithful to the original… Oh, no wait. :)

  • I’ll never, ever understand who thought up the idea for this game for the 360. What did the brain storm / sales pitch sound like? “Let’s take an amazing franchise name with a richly-crafted world and loyal fan base. We’ll make a game for the 360 out of it! Now, the logical way would be to make an RPG, since that’s what the franchise is. But, let’s mix it up a bit. Ditch the RPG, ditch the stories and backgrounds for everything, change a few things around, and… PRESTO! A deathmatch-only FPS! It’ll be amazing!”

    >:( Grrrr… But really, what’s worse – that someone came up with this idea, or that enough people thought it was a good enough idea that they made it this way? :(

Anyway, RIP FASA; you’ll be missed.

  • I definately miss fasa among many of the great RPG companies of the 80’s. Battletech, one of my all time favourites despite munchkin kiddie clan invasion. Their star trek rpg was another great game. I still have both. Their Doctor who rpg was quite good too. I wish I’d gotten that when I had the chance instead of that rubbish trade paperback “rpg” that came out in the 90’s. I mean only 1 rule (opposed d6 die roll) and no character creation? please I’ll take FASA any day.
