Alright campers, it’s time for another round of ‘tell the dane what to do’. As you know there’s now less than two weeks before Rikke and I embark on our NY07 tour, and gosh if you aren’t going to drop some knowledge on us. Prompt.
We’re looking for pretty much anything that could be of interest to first-time tourists like us. Shopping, museums, zoo’s. The works.
I’m maintaining a Google Map with placemarks for potential locations. So if you’ve got the time, look up the recommended location and drop a link to it in the comments. That way it’s easy for me to add it to my map, and the digital circle is complete.
Did they ever release Legally Blonde on the other side of the pond? I’m not sure, but if they did, you’ve got to see the musical at the Palace Theater.
There seems to be a conspicuous lack of East Village and Lower East Side spots! There’s a lot of fun to be had on this side of town. Here are some suggestions:
There is lots to do in Brooklyn, too:
But, what ever you end up doing, you’ll enjoy yourself!
Best meal I’ve ever had in New York: Restaurant Daniel.
Don’t forget the famous delis. You have to go to Carnegie Deli and try their yummmylicious corned beef heaven!
Of course, the Apple store.
Shops on Madison avenue and 5th Avenue!
It’s good that you’re going this fall season. Don’t miss the Central Park. It’s lovely there this time of year. I mean, spend a whole day there. There are a lot of things to do.
And while you’re there, go to the Museum of Natural History.
Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Chinatown shopping!!!
Do the tour/cruise around NYC. I suggest the Manhattan City Lights tour. It’s breath-taking!
So many things to do…. If you’re into musicals, check out Broadway!
I’m going back there too on the 17th! Woohoo! I love NY!
Micheal, I strongly recommend you set some time aside to visit these places, they’re just fantastic and you won’t regret it. For food, there’s a great Italian Restaurant which is largely thought of as one of the best in New York. Its on Clinton Hill and is housed in a 130-year-old structure. Here are the details, 129 Gates Avenue, Brooklyn, tel: 1.7186229202
You can also pick up some photography books, something you can never get enough of while owning an dSLR, at Dashwood Books. The owner, David Strettell is a photography junkie and has devoted his store entirely to Photography books, whether its past works or books on technique. He treats his many rare, out-of-print and vintage finds as artworks themselves. This place is a delight, whether you’re buying or browsing. Details: 33 Bond Street, between Lafayette and Bowery, tel: 1.2123878520 (www.dashwoodbooks.com). Hope this is useful and have a blast in New York. Cheers mate!
Jim Hanley’s Universe on 33rd, right below Empire State Building
In Union Square you will find 2nd hand bookstore with amazing prices (I think it’s 7 floors, I just love their art section.) Next to it there’s a great toystore and a nice B&N.
Spend a couple of hours walking in the village (pick up free local newsletters, they are awesome) and try walking 8th avenue at night (from 14th-30th)
Umhm. I’ll think of other things. Been there 4 times and already missing it..
Cheers!
Try a Silver Spur’s Restaurant, I think there’s one on Broadway and 14th? close to that.
Also, if you have the time, walk the brooklyn bridge. It’s pretty neat. I should know more things to go to, but I’m puzzled. I’ll post back here once I am done class.
Your combined information has been assimilated. Thank you for your cooperation.
Not knowing your tastes – hard to say, but:
- the Cooper-Hewitt design and technology museum – many people don’t even know it’s here
- Prospect Park is even more beautiful than Central Park (the opinion of the men who designed it) – and we’ve got lots of good food. Not as fancy settings – nor as fancy prices.
- Other things would depend on your taste(s). The Elizabeth Streb dance company – brilliant combinations of acrobatics, fearlessness, and dance. They’re going up with a new show – and I believe they’re having open – free– rehearsals during the days before it opens. http://www.strebusa.org
- and – if you’re coming as tourists – you should know at least one set of people. My mobile number is (917) 617‑1806. My wife’s a nurse, I’m a lawyer, so at least some kinds of trouble we can get you out of. The other kinds of trouble we just start.
Enjoy your trip.

P.S. Big fan, of course of your work. Not that I can make it do what I want, mind you.
Good stuff; it’s going into the map asap. And thank you for your consideration with the phone number; it is indeed very nice to have.
Hit me up at heilemann at gmail, and I’ll see if I can’t help you make it do what it needs to do :)
