  Jackson is not directing The Hobbit, nor is he even producing it. He’s just getting an executive producer credit.

  How much actual involvement he’ll have remains to be seen. The press release even mentions that actual production will be handled by New Line.

  Which is too bad :(

  It’s semi-on. As Sean says, PJ is currently only attached as executive producer.

  From what I read, tho, there’s still a chance he’ll direct.

  I read he is directing on bbc entertainment news.
  “executive” producers usually take part in the main directors cut anyway don’t they?

  A tiny update on this:

  Peter won’t be directing because he felt the fans have waited long enough for ‘The Hobbit.’ It will take the better part of every day of the next four years to write, direct and produce two ‘Hobbit’ films. Given his current obligations to both ‘The Lovely Bones’ and ‘Tintin,’ waiting for Peter, Fran, and Phillippa to write, direct and produce ‘The Hobbit’ would require the fans wait even longer.

  No, executive producers usually don’t take an active role in production, let alone a piece of the director’s pie.
