R.I.P. compact discs

When I moved to Scotland about 2 years ago I left behind all of my CD collection (as well as all my VHS movies and a good collection of books), but I brought all my music with me as MP3’s. When I got back I initially thought it inevitable that I would be getting my CD’s back from my brother who’s been safeguarding them. But we, that is Rikke and I, have decided to not haul our CD’s to Copenhagen. After all, what’s the point?

All our music is stored digitally at the moment and while there’s a few gigs left to get under control (mostly hers), it is all indexed with complete information and album covers, making it immediatly accessible (especially with iTunes!) and the added bonus of not scratching the CD’s whenver you want to listen to them is certainly not to be discounted either.

So while it’s sad to say goodbye (for now) to all those CD’s that, for a large part, have grown and follow me for a decade; it is time to move on to greener pastures.

It’s been lurring in the shadows for a while, but I think I can finally say:

I buried mine when I moved to Scotland 2 years ago. They are such a hassle and everywhere I want to listen to music I have a device that’s capable of producing sound from a file: Ipaq, XBOX or PC.

Never missed, never will. And the scary thing is that it’s only just about now +/- 12 months that I’ve been able to get a legal alternative for acquiring music.

Essentially I haven’t used my CD’s for 4+ years! The recording industry really needs to get its head out of its ass.

Luckily it seems to be happening now, though still not entirely satisfactory.

? Wait a second… Did you actually bury them?!

As good as, anyway :) They’ve been holed up in a closet at my parents place.
