My Cubicle

Consider this the first photo from my ‘photoblog’, heh. Some of you might remember my having an image of my room on the about page, back when I was living in Scotland. I’ve always enjoyed seeing how other people’s work environments look, so here’s mine. I must apologize ahead of time for the slightly blurry image, but it was early and I was in a hurry to get some breakfast in our cantina.

Now, who can spot all the geeky things in that picture?

    • Dual monitor display (nice)
    • Powerbook
    • Graphics Tablet (Doesn’t look like a Wacom but I may be wrong)
    • Comic book(s)
    • Buzz Lightyear… to the rescue! :P
    • iPod – I believe it’s a 2nd gen (Didn’t know you had one of them!)

Think that’s it… so what do I win (please say either your iPod or PBook :P)

I’m curious about something Michael. What is the noise level like in your office? I notice the headphones lying on your desk. Is there a lot of talking and moving about and general disruptance? I find it very difficult to concentrate with stuff like that going around and am wondering if everyone else is the same?!?

Hey Michael, you aint pinging no more, you need to add in the urls of where you want to ping :D

Mmm. Hellboy. Can’t that movie be released in our neck of the woods right about now?

I remember some picture from Cliffy B’s (The UT2004 guy) office. He had tons of toys everywhere. A shitload of transformers and various other cool toys.

Looking good. Thats a sweet setup. Are you running beta 1.2? that may be why you’re pinging.

This is way nicer than any “cubicle” I’ve ever had before. :)

Stew, WHAT are you talking about?

Go into your Wordpress admin panel, goto Options > Writing then in the “Update Services” box enter these:

    http://rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2
    http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
    http://ping.blo.gs/
    http://rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/
    http://api.my.yahoo.com/RPC2
    http://ping.rootblog.com/rpc.php
    http://ping.weblogs.se/
    http://bitacoras.net/ping/
    http://www.weblogues.com/RPC/
    http://xping.pubsub.com/ping/

It means that whenever you add a new entry you “ping” those sites with your update and it means those that use blog-checkers can see when your site is updated.

Mike: We actually have a super-open work environment. From where I’m sitting I can see some 30 or so people. And also the entire building is an open structure of sorts, so when the dog – we have a dog – starts howling/barking, the entire company can hear it :)

But it’s actually surprisingly quiet most of the time. I use headphones 60-70% of the time, which is when I concentrate the best, but that’s actually mostly to keep me from bugging everyone else (I’m like that).

Or sound guy just moved into his brand-spanking-new sound room which is a few meters from where I’m sitting. Anyway, any and all concepts of the rest of the building being quiet were shattered beyond belief when I entered that room and closed the door behind me.

You could hear a pin drop!

I have a picture of the sound room btw, it’s quite impressive. I’ll see if I’m allowed to post it.

Stew: Ehm, I know that, but why the hell are you talking about it in the first place? I’ve already configured it…

  13. 13 Bjørn

I’m a big believer in glass walls in offices. I totally and absolutely understand the advantages to an open environment, but too open (which I consider an 100% open office like IOIs) I would not like.

Michael, what advantages do you notice by the environment being 100% open? And who takes care of the dog at night, btw?

Funky that you’re allowed to post the picture, though … hope I can return the favor in a month’s time :)

It’s not actually working, dunno why but its not logging updates, however I judt updatedmy own site and the ping never worked so I think it might be Wordpress.

What’s the switchbox under the the desk for? (I think I’d hit my knees on it all the time.)

    – Darth Vader under the left screen
    – not sure what the black thang is above the mouse pad…
    – or the grey thing (looks like on old microphone or a lamp from here)
    – Is that an AT-AT off to the far right? It looks like something from a Sci-fi movie.
    – MS mouse and keyboard

    No arms on the chair?!

  16. 16 Michael

Bjørn: Well there is something cool about being able to see almost the entire team by turning your head 180 degrees. At first I was adamant about wanting an office, but now I don’t know. Mostly I think it’s because I’ve grown accustomed to the way things work at the moment (you know, breaking old habits, even bad ones, can be hard).

On one hand I miss walls. For putting up posters, drawings and what not in particular, but also for cutting down on the whole ‘everyone can see my monitor!’ feeling.

Mostly though I think it helps tie people together in a stronger way. Depending on who they people you’re seated with are, you can play music through speakers and actually interact without disturbing more than the 4-5 guys in the room. That’s the way I like to work anyway, I know that some people would rather be facing a wall for optimal concentration, that’s cool, and probably more productive as well ;)

The dog is Jakob Andersen’s, one of the former co-owners of Io. His mother, who is our accountant or something, often walks it. He’s a big fucker! The dog that is. And he has a Kenny doll, which makes me laugh whenever he tears into it (“OMG he killed Kenny! BASTARD!).

He’s recently adopted a tendency to howl, which is rather hilarious, and sometimes slightly annoying. He sounds like a sealion. :)

Hehe, the ‘switchbox’ would probably (in the lower left corner?) be my computer :) — Nice spot on Darth Vader!

The ‘black thing’ is my… whatchamacallit; thing to put pencils and stuff in. The grey thing is my lamp, folded up most of the time, as I like to work in darkness (which by the way is one of the minuses of working in such an open working environment, you can’t always control the light).

  18. 18 Michael

Ah yes, and where the hell do you see an AT-AT? :) No, sorry. No AT-AT.

  19. 19 mog

Thanks for the pinging, didn’t notice the change. Wondered why I wasn’t showing up on recently updated. Hey, isn’t that one of those new Powerbooks? Did you get it before or after they upped the speed? I don’t pay a whole lot of attention to the Windows stuff, just the Macs.

    There’s:

A speeder bike on the other guy’s speaker
    A tank on his monitor…
Is the thing on teh far right an Alien (or Alien Queen)?
There is a pink thing on the right, too – can’t be a Power Ranger – maybe a Gundam?

  21. 21 Andrew Smith

    Can’t believe I said “teh”…

  22. 22 Andrew Smith

Ooooh, and is that ‘Cloud’ from FFVII, top of the picture, in the distance, above the monitors?

  23. 23 Michael

The pink thing is actually a package of chocolate cookies :)
The Alien is right, it’s the Alien3 alien. You can’t see it in this picture, but the guy sitting at the table to the right has the Queen. Also you can just see the leg of his predator :) (Mine is sitting 30cm outside to the left :)

Also, its prettu much impossible to see, but the Queen-guy (Miklos) also has a Warhammer 40K dreadnaught visible on his monitor :)

    No FF clouds though :)

Anyway, the Powerbook is a 1Ghz, bought it last November.

I can see from the images on IO’s website that it’s the old newspaper Aktuelt’s building you’re located in.

I used to work in there as one of the really annoying sale persons to call you up and try and push a newspaper subscription down your throat (BTW: I was really bad at my job because I hated doing it, but hey; I really needed the money at the time ;-))

But that is one great building with a fantastic view of the Copenhagen seaside.

“To infinity and beyond” (like Buzz). But the most striking thing is the absense of paper, books … things!!! Are you really, really working there??? That’s the geeky thing about the picture!

  26. 26 Rori

I would HATE to work in that environment.

Listening to people snort and stuff? eww.

  27. 27 Dave Simon

    Michael –

My Buzz Lightyear is bigger than yours. (I have an original from the first movie, one of the rare ones they joked about in the second movie.)
