I know that some of you are waiting for entries on specific things, and I assure you that they are on their way.
For now, let me just ask you a favor. I’m doing some tweaking to Binary Bonsai these days, and I wouldn’t mind some critique. So please, by all means, feel free to leave a comment on what you dislike and why. I’m not making any promises, but I’d like to hear what you might find redundant and/or an eye-sore.
The feed entries for your clippings doesn’t contain the actual links, only a link to the actual entry/comments on your site.
Yeah, you’re right. How about that! That’s a WP problem, I’ve posted about it on the WP forums, hopefully someone over there has an answer to what’s going on with that.
Just a few bits:
1) Take the “Older” and “Newer” posts images out your permanent.php file, they don’t actually work :)
2) Maybe offer a “Lite” skin, I would expect a fair number of folk would use this, just something nice and simple, remove some of the images. (If you want I could roll up a CSS file and see if you like it), oh and it would cut down on your bandwidth a bit :D
3) I would love to see the time of a post next to the date of the post, same goes for comments… it’s nice to know when a post is “dead” :D
Think that’s me, on the whole your site is very well presented and crisp :D
1) Yeah it’s quite annoying that they don’t work actually. Something that happened from 1.0 to 1.2 :(
2) What kind of things would you like to see go in the lite skin?
3) I’ll probably work that in.
Please NO MORE nature scenes in the header! ;-)
The “Hitman” header looked AWESOME and even the “Kill Bill” one was pretty cool, but I just don’t care for these last two “pictures of trees” headers :-(.
Otherwise, the design is GREAT!
I actually quite like your site. If anything, I’d like to hear a little bit about how you utilize WP, being one of the unwashed masses who migrated to WP after the whole MT 3.0 debacle. In particular, I like the clippings area, and would love to possibly do something like that myself. I don’t want to bite your style, but I really like what’cha got going on. Awesome site, I’m adding it to my regular visits. :)

Brian: I’ll see if I can’t do some sort of writeup on that soon. As for the clippings, I’m using Matt’s Asides, which workes resonably well, except for the fact that it still has some issues that I would like to see removed. Also, there are a few things I would like to see implemented that I do have the power to do, and I’ll be doing those asap.
The lite skin would basicaly be the layout with the images and much simpler, maybe more colour and typography based. Can’t find an example link that’s really what I’m meaning this is probabley the closest thing I can find. However I would put in a proper sidebar with your clippings and that lot.
About links in RSS feed, there is a “strip_tags” somewhere in the php script that creates the RSS feed. Search, destroy and have links show up in your RSS feed. The only problem is that this will affect your regular RSS feed as well and images etc. will not get stripped out and I am not sure how to separate them out.
How bout something less envy inducing, everytime I come here, feel like my blog is crap by comparison. However, being so spiffy reflects well on WP and happy to send people your way to show off good design.

hmm on smaller screens the layout still breaks out to left under the header by 5 pixel or so
(e.g. when window is the same or smaller size than the layout)
it’ a nice layout, only that i have seen those rounded tabs on too many blogs to really be too keen about them, but hey, they’re definately not ugly! ;)

I like all your headers, including the nature ones! The Kill Bill one was probably the absolutely coolest, but given that you do change it every now and then I think it is nice to see that it is not one-dimensional.
The new comments since last vistit does not work at all. I get what seems to be totally random numbers from visit to visit.
Sometimes the comment form forgets my name but remembers my URL.

One thing I always like seeing on people’s sites is a history of designs which they’ve gone through. Obviously I don’t mean each time you change the banner, but rather each time the site’s frontend is essentially rebuilt from the ground up. I doubt the screenshots would eat too much into the bandwidth if you don’t publicise it too much, but I love seeing how a person’s design skills get better, and tastes change over time.
Not really a critique, but it’s something I reckon would be worth having.
Thanks for the critiques guys, I’ll make sure to consider everythign carefully as I go about ‘cutting’ the bonsai over the next week.
A “back to blog” link on the photo gallery would make my very happy indeed.
