A Musical Baton

It would seem, during my travels to the US, I have called down the wrath of what must be the fastest sprading meme this year, namely the notorical Musical Baton. Both Sascha, Joen and Jeff thought I should be forced to give up what is otherwise cosidered confidential information. Alright then.

I have no idea where it originated, nor do I want to bother with finding out. Regardlessly I will just point out the antiquity of asking for the last ‘CD’ one bought, what with digital distribution and everything.

Total volume of music files on my computer:
62 GB in 12,493 files, lasting 38.8 days

The last CD I bought was:
Jack Johnson – In Between Dreams

Song playing right now:
“Sonnet” by The Verve from Urban Hymns

Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:
“Turn the Page” by The Streets
“Somersault” by Zero 7
“Furious Angels” by Rob Dougan
“Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding
“Civil War” by Guns and Roses

This last one is an impossible task for sure, so that is not necessarily representative of a ‘top 5’.

Five people to whom I’m passing the baton:
I hate to spoil a good thing, but I’m so late into the game that I can’t be bothered with finding people in my blogroll who haven’t already done this thing and forgotten about it.

I don’t know about the CD thing, I’ve bought no less than 5 CDs since I took the baton. As much as I like the idea of digital distribution, I love the idea of having the physical medium as backup, if only they would cut about 1/3 off the price (and forget all about that stupid copy protection).

So this musical baton thingy…Think you (or someone else) could pass it to me?

  3. 3 Michael

    Consider it passed :)

Well I don’t know anything about meme’s or whatever they are… but man, a wise move on your latest album purchase. Good choice!

Heh, seems I was one of the few left out of this meme too, probably because nobody reads my blog.

I like the list. Furious Angels is beautiful. Is that the version where he sings?

  6. 6 Michael

    Indeed it is Avinash.

I find these things a bit silly. I mean, what can this information be used for other than potentially downloading a few songs yourself? It’s like the ‘what are you listening to?’ forum threads you see in every forum.

Oh well, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one that likes Summersault by Zero 7 :D

Meme’s are self-glorifying little games, not a whole lot more. Nonetheless they add a little pre-conformed personalization to the people who participate. And they’re a fun way to network. If I had followed the ‘rules’, I would have linked to 8 other people in the blogosphere…

Memes are a little more than just self-glorifying little games.

True David, though what we commonly refer to as a ‘meme’ in the blogosphere is too self-concious to really be rolled in under that definition; at least I think so.

  11. 11 Joen

Great minds think alike. Those are very good picks!

    Welcome back.

haha! I expected you to have far more batons passed to you that! Which is why I never passed you one of mine ;-)

I quite liek this meme, as opposed to some of the other more ‘random’ memes, as it actually gives you maybe a slightly differently angled insight into the person behind the site youve maybe been reading for a while – I think so anyway. Ive found some of these quite interesting – and its a short read :-D

DAMN **haha! I expected you to have far more batons passed to you than that!*

Thanks for playing. I think these memes are just made to get the creator free traffic. Seems to have worked well for me.

A different sort of musical game:

Jack’s new CD = great choice! I love it. Very chill music :)

DAMNIT! I again miss out on a cool meme! If anyone doesn’t want their baton anymore could I borrow it?

  18. 18 Theiggsta

Very interesting music collection, though mine is not nearly as large.

Like Michael said to me: “Consider it passed”.

  20. 20 Michael

Feel free to take one of my batons :)

  21. 21 Avinash Vora

How do you “take” or “send” a baton, exactly? Is it something to do with trackbacks or whatnot?

  22. 22 Teja

Avinash, well just link to the person’s blog and they should find out (try to link to people you know that read your blog). Otherwise, you link to them and email the author telling them of it.

  23. 23 Michael

Usually you mail the person to tell them.

  24. 24 Greg

I will only participate in something like this if, and only if, there is an actual physical baton being passed.

  25. 25 Donnie Jeter

Thanks for the email Michael ;)
    I love this new baton!

  26. 26 Marianna

    How typical is that?
I come for a template about 7 hours ago but unable to work out the PHPs learn everything about Michael who happen to live in the same city as me. Not only that but we also lived in Scotland as the same time. What are the of your favorite template living in your neighborhood I ask you? I am going to wrap it without having to finish the template. My apology for a sincerely bizarre and irrelevant comment but it is rather late and I am excited with my template. Laaate template…

    >:)

ps. too early to want a baton?

  27. 27 Marianna

At* the same time, what are the odds*.

  28. 28 Scott

Zero 7 is f’ing awesome and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy knowing others listen and enjoy them as well!
