K2 Alpha

Visit K2’s new permanent home

I have moved K2 onto its own page, complete with comments, ping- and trackbacks. This makes it easier for me to maintain my blog without it turning into a K2Development.com.

Please post your comments over there from now on.

    Just now that I started to watch a movie… :)

  2. 2 CarLBanks

    I know you said don’t use it; but I decided to put it on my main blog. I want to help you test it out.

    In the index.php it says “If there is more than one author, show author’s name” and I don’t have any authors – only registered users; but it’s showing the author name.

  3. 3 Chris J. Davis

    CarL,

    registered users ARE authors to WP. The fact that they don’t post doesn’t matter.

    I will get on this as soon as I can to make K2 a little smarter in this area.

  4. 4 R

    In firefox, the whole right column seems to be shifted to below the posts.

    R,

    Did you set columns to 1 in your preferences? As far as I know that is the only way that would happen.

    Check your K2 Options and make sure the first option is set to 2 columns.

  7. 7 Philip

    Chris,

    I had R’s problem, too (I am using Deer Park Alpha 1 [and I have K2 set to use two columns]), but it seemed to fix itself when I added some About text in the K2 options panel.

    Also, in Deer Park I am noticing a 1-pixel line under all the links in the header (i.e. blog, site admin, etc.), yet it’s not there in (regular) Firefox.

  8. 8 CarLBanks

    I enabled live archives and now it’s complaining about no folder name /archives/ found on the server. Can you also post links to each plugin that is enabled in K2?

  9. 9 R

    weird… okay, as far as i could tell it was set to that, but switching to one and back to two fixed the problem (not sure that this was it, but it works now…) thanks.

  10. 10 Monkeypup

    When I go to the k2 options page, it says “no valid plugin found.”

  11. 11 Monkeypup

    Nevermind. Me=Stupid.

  12. 12 MarkMS

    K2 works wonderfully in Safari and Firefox, but in IE the sidebar is off. Where it says “latest” I have another category underneath it called “affiliates”, but in IE it just says “liates.” Everything else is cut, like the links under “latest.”

    Any suggestions? BTW I’m using IE 6.0 on Windows not the IE on my G5 Powermac

  13. 13 Chris W

    My hat is off.

    Even the alpha is fantastic. At this rate the beta will be getting oscar nominations.

    One or two points that confuddled me as I implimented it though,

    1- Is it / will it be possible to remove the ‘site admin’ tab from the nav menu?
    2- Is there a list of ‘required’ plugins, ie -del.icio.us, flickr, etc ?
    3 – Using IE 6 – the menu on the right is covered (about 15% or so) in both fixed and felxible mode, even with a variety of widths.

    Once again, congratulations. Kubrick set the standard for WP 1.2 themes, K2 (however early in its development it is) will no doubt do the same.

  14. 14 CarLBanks

    Mark, I also see the “Latest” sidebar problem in Opera.

  15. 15 XeroCool

    Any help?

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/38562

    I get a Invalid Plugin Page or something error when clicking on “K2 options” more info at above link. Any help?

  16. 16 Chris J. Davis

    Thanks for all the feedback so far guys, Michael is gonna have a ball when he wakes up (lazy bumb).

    The list of plugins is a good idea, and works into something else that I am brewing to offer to the K2 gawds…

    We will have to see what “The Big Giant Head” has to say about this when he awakens…

  17. 17 XeroCool

    Chris, read my post above :P.

    Also, what about a kubrick implented asides?

  18. 18 Chris W

    My mistake about the ‘site admin’, it only appears when you’re logged in.

    However, I have noticed that every now and then, the ‘clippings’ disappear and there’s only a ‘1’ where the bookmarks once were.

  19. 19 CarLBanks

    I can confirm that the Sidebar is misaligned in Opera. I also posted a few errors I noticed on Binary Bonsai which are still alive in K2. The posts I made are in the previous two-three posts on Binary Bonsai.

  20. 20 Monkeypup

    Dare I even ask for the 1 column, 2 column option in the admin panel to become 1, 2, or 3 columns?
    A fella’s allowed to dream, ain’t he?

  21. 21 XeroCool

    Chris W, same problem. I think its cause our servers may not have curl installed..

  22. 22 David

    It is so beautiful.. cries

    I will have to try the alpha out… -> Goes to install another copy of WordPress somewhere to play with it. :)

  23. 23 CarLBanks

    I do agree that having Asides implemented would be a great feature.

    One last question before I go back to rest during my cold. When will be able to add an image ontop of the blue background. I like the blue and would love if it was a base to add onto like in Kubrick.

  24. 24 Kyle

    Again the time thing is easy:

    post_date_gmt . “ GMT”)), time()); ?> ago

    as it reads now:

    post_date_gmt . “ GMT”)), time_since()); ?> ago

    That should fix it at least it has for me.

    I have to say either it is a glitch in the alpha or simply an aesthics change I don’t like. The pingback/trackbacks etc have been seperated and thats nice. However to cram them over on the aside AND below comments is unncessary.

    I too agree that Asides should be included.

    Curious as to what Chris J Davis has up his sleeve for us “kubrick gawds” and wannabe “gawds”

  25. 25 XeroCool

    How do I make the live comment preview work? I have activated the plugin, no luck. I have tried adding its function, no luck ;.

  26. 26 David Babylon

    Loving it so far. I’ll be back with feedback shortly.

  27. 27 R

    Once one types in some About Text inh K2 Options, is there a way to make the About disappear?

    In IE, the “comments” appear on hover doesn’t work.

  28. 28 Kyle

    I can confirm this as well…the comments rollover in IE doesn’t work.

    Course add that to Reason 3942873092873409827 of why to get Firefox.

  29. 29 Kyle

    I can also confirm R’s troubles with the sidebar and the solution he proposed does work:

    1) Switch to One Column, update.
    2) Switch back to Two Column, update.

  30. 30 Kyle

    One last one before i hit the sack. Do we have to have the plugins for livearchives etc?

    I dont’ see anything for my live archive.

  32. 32 Michael

    Hey everone, I’m awake! :) — I’ll do my best to gather a list of your questions so far and answer them as best as I can.

  33. 33 Denis

    Michael,

    I’m tremendously impressed with your pruning of CSS, Wordpress, HTML and JavaScript features to create such a lovely theme: you are no longer a Padawan in your mastery of the art of Binary Bonsai!!

    OK, it’s late and I’m rambling. Regardless, I FOUND A BUG – wordpress Pages that have Parent pages do not wrap as tabs at the top, but break to a new line, and screw the order and text wrapping of the tabs. You can see on my own site

    K2 is impressive. Congrats & kudos abound, your hard work certainly inspires.

    Regards,
    Denis

  34. 34 Jim Kem

    Need some help. It would seem that the width of K2 is difrrent. Wider than this page using K2. also, how do i install the K2 options panel? another thing, K2 doesn’t seem to work well with the super archives plugin.

  35. 35 Illya Lapko

    My K2 Options Panel doesn’t work. It returns a “404 Cannot find page” error. Can anybody help? This is the error by the way:

    The requested URL /wp-admin//home/illya/domains/illya.sizzly.com/public_html/wp-content/themes/k2/k2options.php was not found on this server.

    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

  36. 36 April

    It’s okay, I’ll be waiting for the brand-spanking new perfect version. In the meantime, keep up the good work. :)

  37. 37 Nico Kaiser

    Great work, Michael! I already had a first look at the files.

    One first idea: why not use twTouched for the “edit” link if it’s available? Something like

    if (function_exists(‘twTouch’)) twTouch(); else edit_post_link(‘edit’, ‘’, ‘’);

    (it would be also nice to make twTouch display its link as “edit” instead of “[^]” then, however this is a problem of the plugin, not k2)

    And what about the idea of just displaying “Level 1” pages (which have no parent) in the menu? I have lots of sub-pages, which makes the menu look terrible…

  38. 38 Mark J

    wp_list_pages() needs to have “depth=1” so that it doesn’t show sub-pages in the menu and screw up the layout.

  39. 39 trench

    yes, i can confirm that the right column does indeed go under the main story column. I provided a screenshot of this. It only happens in I.E. Looks great in Firefox though.

    Heres the link.

    http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/313/confimation1wc.jpg

  40. 40 Avinash

    Wow.

    Bra-fucking-vo.

    Asides: yes. K2 Options under Options: yes.

    One thing: I’m not ling where the pingbacks and trackbacks are placed…why are they right-justified? Keep them left justified, or, have them start on the empty space on the right in line with the comments themselves.

    Excellente.

  41. 41 Kitta

    When I first installed the delicious plugin it was doing the same thing, putting a ‘1’ where the delicious links should have been, it seemed to correct on its own accord though.

  42. 42 XeroCool

    Michael, For the del.icio.us plugin error, Its a cache problem.

    http://xerocool.innereyes.com/wordpress/kubrick_2_-_k2.php (I posted it there, the bug and solution).

  43. 43 Kyle

    Yep, I agree avinash about the ping/trackbacks

  44. 44 Michael

    Read the entry. I’ve already addressed the pingback placement issue.

  45. 45 XeroCool

    Michael, for your smiley border issues, its no problem. Go to style.css and find:

    .primary img {
    margin-left: -5px;
    padding: 4px;
    border: 1px solid #ccc;
    max-width: 100%;
    }

    Replace that with:

    .primary img {
    margin-left: -5px;
    padding: 4px;
    /* border: 1px solid #ccc; */
    max-width: 100%;
    }

    Please note if you do remove it, Your images other images wont have the borders…

  46. 46 Michael

    I’ll probably use a selector to pinpoint the smilies. Won’t work properly in IE, but then what will? (PS: the padding needs to be adjusted as well).

  47. 47 CarLBanks

    Michael, Opera is easy to download even with the Ad-Supported version. I also posted a link to this alpha on the My.Opera.com forums to have people debug K2 in Opera.

  48. 48 Monkeypup

    Michael-
    I think the options should stay in the presentation page. It seems to make much sense to me to place them there. Considering Presentation is where you go to switch your theme.
    On a related topic, one of the things that excites me most about this release is the option panel. Like the recent theme Urban Giraffe (http://www.urbangiraffe.com/themes/giraffe), it allows coding idiots like me to make changes without needing to know a lick about css. I hope that many more themes follow your lead. This is something that I’d like to see as a standard implementation for themes as WP approaches 1.6. I think this type of theme design, along with a few other changes (such as the ones suggested by Gregory in his “friendly templates” post: http://twilightuniverse.com/2005/06/making-friendly-templates/) would bring Wordpress to a much larger audience, as well as allowing folks like me who stumble through everything through a lot of trial and error to more easily customize their blog. All in all, great work, and the future for WP and it’s community is looking brighter every day.

    —And I’m still holding out for a three column solution, no matter how unlikely the prospects!—

    :)

  49. 49 XeroCool

    Michael, Did you read my post about the k2options.php solution? Visit my site and look at the kubrick 2 post. The solution has been posted..

  50. 50 CarLBanks

    Could you also add Dunstan’s Time of Day? I can’t get the Time Since plugin to work.

  51. 51 CarLBanks

    Could you also please add the Gravatar rating feature into K2 options? Since it’s currently set to X.

  52. 52 CarLBanks

    I also added .header { url(‘images/bg.jpg’); and uploaded the header image and it still isn’t adding it.

  53. 53 XeroCool

    Closed it with a } ?

    .header {
    url(‘images/bg.jpg’);
    }

  54. 54 CarLBanks

    I did that now, it still isn’t accepting it.

  55. 55 CarLBanks

    I don’t mean to ask a lot of requests; but is it also easy to make one of the tabs on the top a link to another page on the site. A page not controlled by WP?

  56. 56 Evan

    Carl, you should be using #header rather than .header in your CSS.

  57. 57 Evan

    Or rather,
    #header { background: url(‘images/bg.jpg’); }

  58. 58 XeroCool

    Umm, You go to header.php, look for the code, and just add a your text here before the closing and after the beginning off:

  59. 59 XeroCool

    Err, Ignore the post above since the code didnt wanna show up. Its simple. Go to your header file, find the menu ul class, and add content there with li tags in between. Look at my source and youll understand (Just rip it if you dont get it)

  60. 60 kapeka

    In Konqueror the comments counter numbers are not in the correct position. They are in the height of the textarea. It has something to do with the position:absolute, because when you change it to relative, the numbers are in the correct heigt but to much on the right side.
    Sorry, i havn’t got any screenshots for now. I will try to post some when I am here again.

  61. 61 XeroCool

    Can someone help me? in ie (http://xerocool.innereyes.com/), The blogroll text and meta gets cut off. I dont know whats wrong, I tried validating everything but no luck. If someone can help me, I’ll appreciate it very much.

  62. 62 9x

    The k2 options, such as the “About” box and turning on the archives, where are they stored?

    Yes, I played with the settings that can’t be undone yet, so I’m wondering, can they be reset manually?

  63. 63 kapeka

    @9x I think the about box could be reseted if you type in the standard text, or not? I saw something like that in the code. I didn’t try it yet, it’s just an quick shot.

  64. 64 XeroCool

    Any help on http://binarybonsai.com/archives/2005/07/07/k2-alpha/#comment-16527 anyone? Another question. How do I get my named color or something added to let peolpe know Im admin? it says in the code:

    get_user_email => somecodehere) {

    But I dont get it. I tried replacing the code that was after => with my email, and no luck.

  65. 65 shorty114

    Looks very nice, I like the comments number hover effect next to the post title on the index. Can’t wait for the release.

  66. 66 9x

    @kapeka: You’re right. It’s right in the code, if the text is “This is the about text” then it won’t show.

    Either way, I’m curious where this info is stored. In the database? Forgive me, I’m not too swift, but I can’t find it in my options table or anything.

  67. 67 CarLBanks

    And weird the Live Archives work now all of a sudden. The stuff on the sidebar is all misaligned for the archives. I do love the live archives though and I guess my server finally got the fact I had Super Archive installed.

    K2, with its alpha bugs, is turning out to be a great theme.

  68. 68 Chris J. Davis

    9X, et al

    Everything that is found on k2options.php is stored in your options table. They will be on the last page… probably page 3.

    Look for the options that start with k2

  69. 69 CarLBanks

    I have another bug. When I click on a category under the post title it doesn’t send me to the correct category, It just sends me to http://project-c.info/archives/category/ and for some reason that gives me a 404.

  70. 70 Peter

    I have been poking around with the stylesheets in order to determine what causes the sidebar clutter in Opera and Internet Explorer (the problem adressed on top of the bug list). And I think I have found the root of evil, although I don’t have an answer on how to get rid of the problem permanently.

    The villain appears to be this line of code in the style.css:

    .secondary div ul, .secondary div ol {
    margin: 5px 0 0 -40px;
    }

    Setting the -40px to 0 (null) fixes the problem in Opera and Internet Explorer. However, the sidebar entries are now messy in Firefox. A solution might be some kind of wrapper or perhaps getting rid of the list tags and rely entirely on s. I’ll poke around a bit myself to see if I can come up with something, but any insights are welcome.

    Btw, the -8px and -3px margin settings in the .comments .commentlist li img.gravatar line of code is probably also worth taking a closer look at (I will eventually) as both Opera and Internet Explorer seems to respond badly to negative margin settings.

    Hope this is helpful.

  71. 71 Peter

    -wrapper and rely on tags, I mean. Sorry.

  72. 72 Peter

    Oh, holy cwap. Forgive me, Michael. Feel free to give this and the previous entry of mine – children of my clumsiness – the knife. What I mean is: div-wrapper and div-tag. This is my last entry today. Promise.

  73. 73 Jeff Wheeler

    Hey, I found a solution for the 404 Options page.

    Edit k2options.php, and then go to line 118. This is inside the k2menu() function.

    Replace FILE with $_SERVER[‘PHP_SELF’] and everything should be dandy. :)

  74. 74 Jeff Wheeler

    Woah, have Textile enabled or something? Well, that’s meant to be this (without the backslashes if they appear): \_\_FILE\_\_

  75. 75 XeroCool

    He means..Find:

    function k2menu() {
    add_submenu_page(‘themes.php’, ‘K2 Options’, ‘K2 Options’, 5, FILE, ‘menu’);
    }

    Replace it with:

    function k2menu() {
    add_submenu_page(‘themes.php’, ‘K2 Options’, ‘K2 Options’, 5, $_SERVER[‘PHP_SELF’], ‘menu’);
    }

    Thanks for the solution. I updated it on my site.

  76. 76 Chris J. Davis

    Hey Jeff thanks!

    Nice catch man. I had thought I had moved to that sometime ago, but must have fogot. Again, why I love OSS development.

  77. 77 XeroCool

    Is the cutting text off in IE a bug? my text is cut off for no reason in IE.

  78. 78 Weiran

    Don’t know if this has already been suggested (too lazy to read 80 comments!), but the IE workaround to max-width has already been done here. I quote:

    Design-wise we implemented a flexible layout with a minimum and a maximum width, something I think works really well, especially in browsers that support the min-width and max-width CSS properties. Since Internet Explorer does not support them, we used IE/Win’s proprietary CSS expressions to create a workaround. It works, but it isn’t as smooth as in more capable browsers.

    He doesn’t state specifically how it works, but have a look inside the IE CSS file and you get:
    #subnav,
    #sidebar2,
    #contentwrap {
    word-wrap:break-word;
    }
    #outer {
    width:expression(document.body.clientWidth > 1000? "1000px" : "auto");
    }
    #content {height:1%;}
    #contentwrap {
    overflow:visible;
    width:99%;
    w\idth:auto;
    he\ight:1%;
    }
    .publication {height:1%;}

    The width:expression(document.body.clientWidth > 1000? "1000px" : "auto"); seems to do it, and the 1% heights I think are used to eliminate the dissapearing text on IE.

    Otherwise, great theme!

  79. 79 Jeff Wheeler

    Thanks :)

  80. 80 CarLBanks

    I have another question, in Firefox and Opera if you put in an image it’s automatically cropped to a certain width; but in IE it isn’t cropped and that is very annoying. I put a nice image and IE blew it out of perportion.

  81. 81 Shiva

    Haven’t installed it yet, Mark, but I just want to say it looks like it’s going to be great. Thanks!

  82. 82 R

    Tried IE (on a Mac), just for kicks. And I got this weird thing where only my own comments showed up, even though I wasn’t logged in. Simultaneously looked fine in Firefox and Safari.

  83. 83 Logan

    Here’s kind of a weird issue: doing a technorati search for “k2 alpha” shows that several different sites that are testing K2 are having their posts indexed by technorati with the title “1 comments” or “X comments” rather than the actual title of the post. I know next to nothing about how this actually works, and don’t even know if it’s a k2 issue. Just an observation.

  84. 84 Michael

    Logan, it’s a good observation. Though I’m unsure why it is, the next alpha will do the comment count a little different.

  85. 85 John Heltsley

    Wow, I like it! Great job, can’t wait for the full version. I only played with it for about 15 minutes today thus far, but can confirm the sidebar shifting in Firefox.

  86. 86 Chad Nielsen

    Regarding the delicious cached plugin…

    I’ve installed the plugin, added the required html file, and edited the delicious cached section of sidebar.php…adding my username where the k2username placeholder was.

    The header showsup, but none of my delicious links. FYI…I just started adding bookmarks to delicious, so it’s not as if it worked previously to K2. The delicious plugin is new to me.

  87. 87 XeroCool

    Chad, read my bugs and solutions and hopefully, It will fix it: http://xerocool.innereyes.com/wordpress/kubrick_2_-_k2.php

  88. 88 Chad Nielsen

    Good info. I’ll give a couple of those ideas a try when I get home.

    Another something I’ve found. I enabled the archives under K2 Options and installed the Super Archive plugin. However, the archives link on my image bar goes to the correct address, but just shows the index content

  89. 89 XeroCool

    Hey Mike or Chris, I found another bug. The trackbacks/pingbacks are shown below..

  90. 90 CarLBanks

    I think that is because Michael is working on perfecting them.

  91. 91 Michael

    XeroCool, while I appreciate your eagerness, could you please post fewer, but longer comments? I think subscribers to this entry are being bombarded :)

  92. 92 XeroCool

    Lol, im sorry. I forgot about the subscriptions. Any way, Ill reply when someone needs REAL help. Any way, Michael, are you working on the theme now? Cause off the pings/trackbacks, I thought it might of been the number of comments people made but I guess you might be working on it.

  93. 93 David Babylon

    One last question before I go back to rest during my cold. When will be able to add an image ontop of the blue background. I like the blue and would love if it was a base to add onto like in Kubrick.

    I have done that over at my site and you can check it out: http://illya.sizzly.com.

    (I’m not sure if my html tags worked in this message)

    Looks good. Does anyone know if there is a way to change the color of the menu bar & tabs?

  94. 94 Reno

    hey michael, (Re: 3 column)

    great work so far, really. Would love it someone could help Michael with a 3 column solution. The reason being is that this template has a lot of potential for other CMS besides WP. I’m also using Drupal which is a more of a CMS than WP and 3-column lend themselves better for bigger sites. I imagine that K2 will be ported for Drupal and other systems and a 3 column solution in a late Beta would be great.

    Lastly, is our mutual friend Joen working with you on this. Thank you for your efforts…its amazing that many are looking forward to your new template.

    Best

  95. 95 XeroCool

    Once it is out of alpha/beta and is final, I MIGHT port it to be a 3 column =)

  96. 96 Gregor

    If there’s somebody that is waiting for full version u can get mine K2 Alpha. Should not be any problems with any browser (including IE :D)
    Adress is http://blog.elepha.info

    Btw. I like this theme. Its great!

  97. 97 trench

    just wondering if anyone has found a solution for the problem in IE with the right column goin under the main. You can see it doing this on my testblog.

    http://www.7milesdown.com/testblog

    This only happens in IE. In Firefox is looks numero uno.

  98. 98 Emanuel

    The sidebar shifts to under the main column: I’m looking for confirmations and conditions on this happening.

    I hade this prblem also with Kubrick (and now I’m running K2 in a test version) and I think to have find the reason:

    the images in the main column are resized to fill the column width (with width= 100% if I recall correctly) that works perfect in Firefox, but not in IE. so the sidebar goes at the bottom since doesn’thave enough space.
    with the border of the images sometimes happens also with K2.

    I’m trying to fix it, but I don’t have a fully working K2: I cannot see the options page: sure it will be also a problem due my provider (it uses the crappiest IIS) but I’m figuring how to fix it.

    oh, for the header image: what is the standard size (I remember you provided a nice tmplate for kubrick and you also said the measures were 760*220, weren’t?)

    thanks for everything!

    cool, i tried it out, as a suggestion, itd be nice if you commented the top, or atlest desribed how it works. In the top, i mean the navigation in header.php

    If there’s somebody that is waiting for full version u can get mine K2 Alpha. Should not be any problems with any browser (including IE :D)
    Address is http://blog.elepha.info

    I checked out your site to see if you fixed the right column from goin under the main. It still shows the problem on your site in IE.

    Anyone have any clue to what the maximum width images can be on the main page? I used to use 500px in width, but it causes the right column to shift under the main column. thanks for any information on this.

    Looks really good. I had a small problem getting the live search (more results) link to work (since my site is under a directory). The problem can easily be solved by opening up livesearch.php, and finding the More Results link. Then inside the href tag add

    Right before

    /index.php?s=&Submit=go&paged=2">More Results...

    Well that post didn’t work very well, just follow this link to see what I’m talking about:

    Michael,

    I’ll probably use a selector to pinpoint the smilies. Won’t work properly in IE, but then what will? (PS: the padding needs to be adjusted as well).

    Smilies have a class wp-smiley so it’s quite easy to style them seperately from other images ;)

    trench: problem seems to be solved… but im not sure because im not having IE… :( but nwm check my site again http://blog.elepha.info and when the right column does NOT fall under text correct body .primary into .primary…

    But if there will be still problems (in design), please send me e-mail to magdolen@elepha.info and ill try to solve that problem. And of course to share the solution with you.

    My sidebar is under my page everytime I add images in FIREFOX and IE. Anyone else experiencing this?

    gah, stupid me. You have to go immediately to the plugin K2 Options page afterwards and declare if you want it fixed or varied width. Neither of them was checked, and after I checked FIXED, it FIXED the PROBLEM! haha.

    Ehm, Bloglines keeps sayin this is a new post, perhaps a K2 bug?

  109. 109 Michael

    Haha, not quite. I keep updating this entry with new bugs and bug fixes. I will move this entry onto a page today, so don’t worry too much about it :)
