Ode to Summer

The summer has slipped through my fingers before I really felt I had an opportunity to enjoy it. Perhaps I’m growing older, or maybe it’s just a bit of me that’s decided it was time for a change, either way I’ve never felt the need for good weather as much as I have this last year.

As these things go it wasn’t a ‘flip of the switch’ transition. But if there was a single moment in time that did the most to change my attitude (apart from the 10 month winter we went through) I’d have to go with the day I sat in our bedroom window, Powerbook in lap, working on K2, while listening to a jazz band of sorts performing just down the street.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival at our doorstep

It was the most idyllic moment of recent memory, and it emobodied everything Copenhagen is to me.

Sun-soaked skies dominated the last few days of the previous week, much to Rikke and my enjoyment. We took a one-day trip to Hven, a small swedish island off the coasts of Denmark and Sweden, where we rented a tandem and biked around. I secured myself a minor sunburn (my nose is still peeling), and another lasting memory of a summer which has been good, but a bit lacking in the sun department perhaps. Photos are coming.

A change in the air promises autumn and the winds are picking up again, soon forcing me to change my t-shirt/shorts uniform to something a bit more weather resistant. Too bad, I like shorts and t-shirts.

Ahead lies an unbearable frozen tundra of winter, a season which invites spooning, hot chokolade and movie-nights, but otherwise has very little to offer in terms of morale-boosting. One good thing though, is that perhaps the blogosphere will pick up some steam again?

Here’s to a beautiful fall.

“We took a one-day trip to Hven.”

Yeah, I’d love to go to Heaven too, just maybe for a bit longer than one day :).

    Cheers Michael!

I figure I’d scope the place out before I decide on a place to live in the afterlife ;)

Wow, you live in a Gorgeous place! It has ten times more character then the plastic prairie, cookie cutter area I live in (It’s very comfortable though..)

I like the thought of sitting in the window coding whilst listening to jazz. I find that listening to jazz can be very conducive to productive coding sessions.

Wow, I want to be there right now!

August has totally sucked, weather-wise, in England. Right now it’s acting like it’s November. I had some nice sunny days off, but mostly I timed them badly and missed the best weather.

Hyde Park on a fantastically sunny may morning/afternoon was pretty cool. The Serpentine, ducks, a deck chair, my camera, roller bladers, horses. All very good. And now it’s August, soon it’ll be autumn, and then little hope of fine weather until next May.

    Where did it go?

I feel your pain! I love Copenhagen in the summertime, but after living in this country for most of my life I’ve come to enjoy the changing of the seasons as well. I’m actually looking forward to the storms in the fall, the snow in the winter and the dark. Well, maybe not the dark… but then it’s a good thing that I have the glow of my laptop to bask in.

Well we had sun this summer in Portugal… too much actually! Hope next year isn’t as dry as this one was, or we will be in serious trouble down here.

Michael, could you please point me in the right direction for some information on the band in that mp3? I like their sound.

I’m feeling about the same way, seems like you blink and the summer is gone. I’m looking forward to a nice fall and winter holding off until the last possible moment.

And about one of you del.icio.us links, Canada never officially sent troops. Although I believe that Canadian soldiers did fight there via joining American units. You’re just trying to stir up sentiment to assert the Danish claim on Hans Island. Never!

Logan, the band is Danish and their name is Baal. They do theatrical-like rock music of sorts; definitely one of the best Danish bands out there in the humble opinion of this blogger. And hey, you’re in luck, most of their music is in English, unlike the one I posted here (which is I believe from a play).

You can find more info on their site.

dave, give up Hans Island, or perish!!

By the way, I can heartily recommend their albums Sensorama and The Supreme Machine.

Thanks for the tune. these guys have alot of material, non? Symphonic rock is some of my favourite stuff.

    “…picking up steam?”

Speaking of steam, has anyone seen the Steamboy movie yet? I have it scheduled on Netflix, but haven’t seen it yet.

Just to ensure that all points of view are represented here: as a southern New England resident (where the summers are too hot and muggy and many think that the winters are too cold and snowy), I always dread summer. It’s all about Spring and Fall in these parts.

I can’t wait for 68 degree days with the leaves changing. And there’s nothing better than weather that’s just crisp enough for jeans, a t-shirt, and a zippered, hooded sweatshirt. Only a few more weeks…

luke, they’ve done a bunch of albums, yeah.

Have you considered accepting a position at the Copenhagen tourism board?

    Unrelated:

As energetic as Steve Balmer, just less bald.

    Very funny.

    Thank you!

    nice post. thanks!

We will not give up on Hans Island — nor anything else with a good Canadian name like Hans. Next thing you’ll be telling me The Little Mermaid was written by someone other than famous Canadian novelist Mordecai Richler. Bah.

Up in Scotland we had a surprisingly dry summer for a change any I spent many an afternoon sitting in the back garden listening to some tunes on the Shuffle and hacking away on the PB (gotta love wifi outdoors!)

It is of course now chucking it down constantly – I expect the snow/hail soon ;)

  21. 21 Michael

I too spent a good many evenings in our backyard on the PB with Wifi, enjoying the great weather and natury outdoors. Mmm barbeque.

Yeah, except it was a Powerbook, and there were no stinkin’ kids!

Hey Michael , I love your website, your posts and everything. Your old site design inspired me to make this http://chadian22.no-ip.com , your livesearch got me investigating in to similar things for mine, amongst some other things I’ve noticed from your site that are absolutly ingenious. A lot of the stuff is still kinda buggy/not completed code, cause im doing the PHP and mySQL and CSS, all of which I need to learn some more. Thanks for the inspiration!
