Web Being Downgraded?

Microsoft has (temporarily?) caved on the Eolas patent dispute, and issued a warning to web developers everywhere: the Internet Explorer plugin architecture is going to get an unwelcome downgrade, and you need to change your pages now to avoid causing user experience problems down the road. You’ve got two months. #

As previously covered.

Binary Bonsai Podcast #4

And so it seems destined that my podcasts hit near the one hour mark, with this one being the longest so far. Contrary to last time however, in this one it’s not just me yapping away about nothing at all.

This time I delve into Holst’s The Planets and talk a bit about what modern day soundtracks it has or may have influenced, as well as a bit of this and that in relation to soundtracks in general.

So by all means, put on yer ol’ headphones and join me in the dream lounge.

As usual I would love to receive some feedback from you, either in the shape of a comment on this entry or as an audio comment on Odeo (real easy, check it out):

PS: If you left an Odeo comment on podcast #2 and #3, I’ll carry it in podcast #5 (if it’s relevant to carry of course)… Sorry about that.

Former Apple Employee Interviews

Here’s a bunch of interviews up in podcast form to celebrate Apple’s 30th birthday. People like Woz, Hertzfeld, Scully and so on.

RAM Schmam

Note to everyone who’re updating the RAM in their Mac mini’s: It’s 667Mhz PC2-5300 DDRII SD-RAM SO-DIMM. I just made the mistake of forgetting the SO-DIMM part and I now have to return a pair of oversized RAM sticks… Good thing it’s not complicated. Now I know why Apple can get away with charging excessive amounts of money for renamed Kingston RAM; people like me just can’t be bothered.

Update: I’m happy to find out it’s not just me being stupid. The MacWorld editor-in-chief made the exact same error, as chronicled in this podcast

Undefeatable

They just don’t make them like they used to.

And thank fuck for that. The name of the movie is Undefeatable and IMDb let’s us know that it is about the following:

Kristi Jones (Cynthia Rothrock) avenges her sister’s death at the hands of a crazed martial arts rapist.

That just about says it all…

PS: It’s gory stuff…

reboot 8.0

Reboot returns in its 8.0 incarnation. I’ll damn sure be there, will you? Last reboot was an eye opener, awash with inspiration, meeting fantastic people, getting ones mind put on its head.

Be there or be []…

iTMS Under Attack in Denmark

“Likewise, Gert Rieder, CEO of TDC, said that “We can only press for something like the French, because it gives the consumers as many opportunities to shop for music.” In Denmark it is currently illegal to circumvent DRM.” #

It being illegal to circumvent DRM is stupid. Just plain old stupid… I buy a car, I can tune it pretty much as much as I want, as long as it doesn’t endanger anyone. Take away this right and people would riot in the streets. Yet if I buy an Xbox or a piece of music off of iTMS, I’m not allowed to remove the DRM out of fear of piracy…

Yet, didn’t I just prove my willingness to purchase legitimate music? Am I not allowed to run any software I want on my Xbox/computer? Just because I want to run Xbox Media Center on my Xbox doesn’t make me a pirate, right? Shouldn’t I be able to play any CD, DVD or game I buy in another country?

Adding insult to injury, when I set up my new Mac mini yesterday, I finally used up the last of the 5 machines on which I’m allowed to play my iTMS music… So what’s a boy to do? Well, since the Danish Justice department has told the Danish Anti-Pirate Group that as far as they’re concerned, allofmp3.com is fair game for Danish citizens until proven otherwise in a court I guess I’ll go get my music from there.

Would I rather put my money in a more legitimate business like iTMS? Of course, but when I offered a crippled product and a non-crippled product, what do I choose?

In other words, DRM must die. Now is hymn still alive?
