Hellboy 2, a Reinvent?

“My idea with Hellboy 2 is that it’s almost a rephrasing. You don’t re-enact the franchise you reinvent it. My favorite movies are like Evil Dead 2 which is basically reinventing Evil Dead 1, so I would hope Hellboy 2 could be taking what I learned from Hellboy 1 and reinventing it.” #

Which reads like this: “Hellboy 1 sucked, sorry. Hellboy 2 will hopefully be better.” Yeah, well I damn sure hope so. Here I am, having trouble getting Rikke to read Hellboy because of what Mr. Toro did to the franchise with his bastard-child movie. And yes, I do also blame Mignola for not putting his foot down stylistically.

Hmm. I generally dislike remakes (or reinventions if you want to call it that). I don’t feel strongly enough about the Hellboy movie that I lean either way with regards to a remake, but honestly (and I haven’t read a single Hellboy comic), I’m having a hard time seeing why a remake is necessary. It seems like the actors, the props, the environment and all that was pinned down pretty well — so they’re going to throw all that out?

I feel more strongly about Hulk, though, and I detest that Hulk 2 will be a remake.

Well, looks like Mr. Toro screwed it up for you too…

Seriously though, Hellboy = Best ever.

    … best ever !?

You realise coming from you, the pillar of good taste in movies (I know you’re talking about the comic book), that’s a damn bold statement!

Maybe you should help me out with my little pet project, a danish ComicWiki, by creating a basic Hellboy stub article? ;)

Well, let it be said I’m not the most well-read comic book fan in the world. But Hellboy sits solidly at the top of my pile.

Hellboy is the best comic. Superb visuals and storytelling – a rare combination, indeed.

The movie was less than stellar though. If it had only been made after Sin City, the visual style might’ve been preserved. Here’s hoping Hellboy 2 will suck less.

I’m curious — are any of del Toro’s less ‘mainstream’ movies any good? I’ve only seen Hellboy and Blade 2, and the direction was lousy on both, particularly the dreadful action sequences. And yet I’ve heard good things about this guy. What am I missing?

I would agree that Hellboy was not great, but not crap. Just there right in the middle.

What are the chances it may be all green screen the second time around? I would say pretty good.

P.S. Hulk sucked and the fact that they would ditch it and start over again is amazing! Bring it on!

Unless Hellboy 2 is an animated film designed by Mike Mignola himself, the fans aren’t going to get what they want. Don’t get me wrong, Hellboy was fine, but nothing to get too excited about,

By the way Chronos and The Devils Backbone, both “smaller” Del Toro films, are creepy and excellent.

Apparently, your opinion is shared by the most. Too bad for me.

I thought it was okay, though I’m always up for a redo :)

Am I a total moron for thinking that the Hellboy movie was pretty ok?

I quite liked the Hellboy movie, I even went as far as buying it on DVD. But then I’d never read any Hellboy comics. I did pick up one of the books after that and I can see why a lot of people were disapointed with the movie.

I enjoyed it not knowing anything about Hellboy, but the movie does lack a lot of the awesome atmosphere and crazy character references/dialogue that the comic books have. Suddenly, the movie doesn’t seem as witty and imaginative as I originally thought it was.

But I do still enjoy it for what it is. don’t shoot me!

Oh yeah, also I think I’m the only guy out there who possibly really enjoyed Hulk. I’ve watched it a bunch of times XD

I must confess that I thought the Hellboy movie was ok. But that just doesn’t cut it when you bring the absolute pinnacle of human art to the silver screen. But yeah, us fan boys will never be satisfied. Sin City was really good, but then again I’m not as invested in that comic as is the case with Hellboy.

I honestly think the Hellboy movie is a POS. Not only does it not even grace the style of the comic, but the entire plot structure is exactly the same as Blade II (also by Mr. Toro).

    It was stupid and lazy.

I enjoyed the Hellboy movie well enough; as I said above, the direction was lousy, but I enjoyed the performances (particularly Ron Perlman). The fact that I have so little expectation of a decent movie adaptation of any good comic probably prevented me from being too disappointed. I did buy it on DVD, but only a used copy from the discount shelf. :)

Maybe Hellboy should just be animated? Mignola’s visual style would be tough to mimic as live action. They did a decent job with “The Amazing Screw-On Head.”

What in the world is wrong with people? Hulk was one of the best comic book adaption movies ever made. The Hulk is a tragic character, not a comical “Hulk Smash!” character, and trying to make him so is a disservice to the character, the writers and the original creator.

My only complaints with the movie was that the quality of the visuals fell in some areas.

I also loved Hellboy… adaptations should preserve the quality of a character and a world, and I think that the first film did that admirably.

    Also Ron Perlman Rules!

I honestly thought the original movie was pretty good!

The Nazi parts were freaky, but other than that I liked it.

HEAR HEAR! I’m with you on this. I thoroughly enjoyed Hulk.

My only complaints with the movie was that the quality of the visuals fell in some areas.

Indeed, Hulk himself looked a bit more rubbery than need be.

  22. 22 Aaron M

Eh, Hulk was okay. I do give Ang Lee credit for trying the comic-panel visual style, even though I don’t think it really worked.

  23. 23 Joe

I admire Ang Lee’s take on the Hulk, but he just didn’t get it…The Hulk should be 75% smash, 25% pathos, not the other way around.

Actually I liked the Hellboy movie. It was’nt great by any means, but I was entertained all the way…well the end was a bit so-so. But to call it crap I feel is unfair.

But I hope part 2 is darker and not so light.
