Quick X06 Thoughts

Time must be speeding up, I don’t know why I would otherwise feel so damn pressed for time constantly.

Regardlessly I feel compelled to quickly comment on Microsoft’s X06 event, which unveiled a whole bunch of very interesting 360 stuff coming up (including the first official trailer of Kane and Lynch: Dead Men, get it from Xbox Live Marketplace).

I almost don’t know where to begin, though I guess the most interesting thing that happened was Peter Jackson announcing his involvement in the creation of a new Halo title, being developed by him, his usual kickass female tag-team and a newly created interactive division of Weta. Wow.

Well in a time where both Spielberg and Cameron have both announced their direct participation in games, I guess it comes as no major surpise. But still. What will be most interesting is seeing how they will balance story and characters with gameplay. It’ll be quite a challenge for them, but hey, after Lord of the Rings, are we even allowed to doubt them? Not really.

And Halo no less; one of my favorite franchies. I was fearing it might see a significant scale-down after Halo 3. After all, the Bungie guys must be a bit tired of the master chief and all his shenanigans by now.

I thought it was slightly muddled how Halo Wars fit into all of that. I do think the trailer for that was a bit crappy compared to the Halo 3 announcement trailer, which kicked so much ass it wasn’t even funny. Add that that, the fact that it’s an RTS game, and my expectations aren’t all that high for it. But then, I’m such a consumer whore, so I’m likely to buy it no matter what.

What else… Oh yeah, the guy who opened the keynote? What an arrogant asshole. Sorry, but I could not deal with that guys’ attitude.

  • Assassin’s Creed, does that look great or what? I can’t wait to play it, I’m sure it’ll be awesome.
  • Bioshock; pheee-weee. Looks very awesome indeed, though I wish they could get some of the naturalistic FPS movement form the trailer into the actual game.
  • Fable 2. Well, after the disappointment that was the first Fable (too linear, great one on one combat, everything else sucked, do I have to fight bees and other stupid insects in all RPG’s?) I’ve got nothing for this franchise…
  • Mass Effect. OMG.
  • Viva Pińata probably won’t see much gametime in this household, but it looks great.
  • Doom on Xbox Live? Did I mention I’ve already played it both in single, co-op and 4-player splitscreen deathmatch? No? Well I did.
  • Gears of War will probably be great, though the keynote demo was a bit bleh. Really it’s a bit too testosterone-stupid for me, but I’ll gladly play it nonetheless…

And that’s most of it really, the rest I don’t have much interest in.

I wish I had more time to record my thoughts these days, but I’m caught up in the real world; damn it!

The Peter Jackson stuff doesn’t really sound that promising to be honest.

I mean sure, it’s probably going to be great stuff for fans of the universe, but from what I heard him saying it sounded more like a mid 90’s “CD Multimedia Experience” rather than anything with any actual gameplay.

Might just be that I care less for the Halo universe and more about the gameplay, but it didn’t really sound very exciting to me. But my feeling is that Spielberg’s EA work is going to be much like this too. As Peter Jackson said so well, he isn’t a game designer, so I guess we shouldn’t expect a game :)

Anyway, all you said (Although Viva Pińata does look like it could be kinda fun…‘ish, and if not you always got the achievements :D). Regarding Halo Wars then I’m quite interested in seeing how they’re going to pull of a proper RTS with the 360 controller. Especially since Ensemble really doesn’t pack the punch they used to. AoE3 was utterly disappointing :G

I was thinking a mix between Dragon’s Lair and The Seventh Guest :)

I’m hoping that Kane and Lynch is only a timed exclusive because at this point I’m only planning on a PS3.
But dammit, I love the games from IO.

I have to agree on the Peter Jackson comment. I have a bad feeling because his name is getting thrown around in all the recent press releases. I think it’s going to be another “Snakes on a Plane” deal. Sure, bloggers will chat to hell and back about it but it most likely won’t make a huge profit.
