Momentum Pictures will release “Death Proof” in U.K. theaters on Sept. 21. A release date for “Planet Terror,” which will also go out via Momentum, has not yet been set. #
September. 21st. September… That’s, let me count here, one, two, a thousand years from now!
Now, I understand that Grindhouse failed miserably at the boxoffice, and I understand the need to do something about that. But September?! I’m guessing it has to do with getting mainland Europe primed for Death Proof or something like that, which is again, from a business standpoint, fair enough. But it sure does sucketh…
Me, I hope some renegade cinema in Copenhagen has luck in importing and showing Grindhouse in its entirety, start to finish. That, or the DVD gets released before the European premiere, and I import it.
If not, well… You have left me no other means Mr. Weinstein.

I just watched it, in its entirety over here in Vancouver. In an old theater converted into a movie theater, it still has balcony seats! It was just the perfect setting, old worn theater and an movie made to look old and worn.
This movie, with its fake previews inbetween the two movies, MUST be seen in one sitting! as it was intended. Awsome movie, Recommended for all action/slasher movie fans.!
For me, the whole splitting up and censoring the thing has been a turnoff.
During the first trailers I was stoked about the movie. Then came the news of the danish splitting and the censorship and I figures “hey, I’ll buy the DVD set when it comes”.
I wonder if any significant percentage felt the same way as I did, with regards to the box office failure.
I can’t believe this. Europe and especially the UK gets screwed over every time, by every facet of entertainment, whether it be movie releases or game consoles – even then with hiked up prices. So sick of it.
I know the film was a flop at the box office, but it’s not like they’ll be LOSING money on it. They’ve advertised the trailers as one movie in UK cinemas, so I’m not sure how they’re going to back track on that.
I think the best way to approach this release is to go ahead with the double-feature which has been so hyped up and advertised for one or two showings a night (even if it is only for a week), but also release the individual films.
They reason they won’t do this: people who want to see both will have to pay twice (at the hiked UK prices, remember) for the individual releases. That right there is the reason. Not only do they get more people going on the off chance (because they’re only 90mins each, and not an epic 3hours), but fans who want to see both will have to pay twice as much. Win win.
What I want to know about the individual releases, is what are they going to do with the (also hyped) faux-trailers, by well-know (in the horror genre anyway) directors?
Then the September release date, this is just a joke. I was expecting this movie in May/June. Like you said, it’ll probably be released on some super-featured-filled region one DVD by the European release. Oh well, there are plenty of releases in between now and then…
Yahoo has some sensational journalism going on…
Yeh… I really can’t see that happening!
Filmsalker have hit the nail on the head…
Damn, that’s really unfortunate. I had the pleasure of seeing Grindhouse in its entirety here in the States, and I really do not understand how they think the film would be better off sliced in two. The films work great together as a double feature, with their faux trailers and throwbacks to old “Feature Presentation” clips, however, screened separately, I just do not see them being as effective. With Grindhouse, it’s the case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
According to BioZonen Grindhouse (Part 1) – Death Proof will be released on june 1st in Denmark and Planet Terror the 20th of july. The same goes for the Cinemaxx movie theaters. I do have a feeling that if you are a member of the BioZonen club or the Cinemaxx Film Klub that you will be able to go to a special screening of sorts to see the movie(s) as they were intended.
While this does suck, take heart:
1. You may get “Death Proof” with the missing reel.
2. You can always get the eventual DVD that has it all!
But it missing a reel was one of the things I was looking forward to! :D
Seeing this as a double feature is the only way to go. It’s disappointing that it did so poorly in the states – I was kind of hoping that this would be the start of a double feature franchise. Whatever happened to going to the movies as an all night event? Now it seems lt’s just something people do in between going to bars and shopping. Tragic.
