Bring me Your Firstborn!

Factoid time!

Human sacrifice was common in the pagan world. It was cruel but had a logic and rationale. The first child was often believed to be the offspring of a god, who had impregnated the mother in an act of droit de seigneur. In begetting the child, the god’s energy had been depleted, so to replenish this and to ensure the circulation of all the available mana, the first-born was returned to its divine parent.

And allow me, on that note, to pitch A Short History of Myth by same, one of the best, if shortest, books I’ve read in years. Insightful and inspiring. And short. It also comes in a beautiful mythology boxset, which is the edition I have — a present — though I haven’t read the other two books yet, so I can’t vouch for them.

Little Big Evangelical Planet

You may have heard that Little Big Planet was recalled due to references to the Qur’an in one of the music tracks accompanying it. Now, you’re free to opine in whichever direction with regards to the idea of recalling something to avoid offending the members of a religion. I live in Denmark, I’ve been through the wringer on this, so I understand why Sony would chose to do so, and I empathize with their decision.

But I haven’t seen this particular aspect discussed anywhere:

It’s quite normal to play music and be inspired by the words of the Prophet Mohammed,” Diabate explaine. “It’s my way to attract and inspire people towards Islam. #

I don’t know how it was a part of the music, what language it was in or what it said, but isn’t there something fundamentally wrong with the notion of ‘attracting’ the players of a family title — that is, in particular, children — towards religion?

Now I hardly think it was the intent of anyone involved to evangelize in Little Big Planet; instead I guesstimate that Toumani Diabate, the musician behind the track, took some liberties — perhaps without even considering it. Very unfortunate, not least because a recall costs one hell of a lot of money, but also because that sort of thing simply doesn’t belong in a child-friendly title.

Regardless, I’m very much looking forward to the game, though I at the same time feel my economy strained under the weight of games coming in the next month or so.

Fact: Republicans are Idiots

The majority of Republicans in the United States do not believe the theory of evolution is true and do not believe that humans evolved over millions of years from less advanced forms of life. This suggests that when three Republican presidential candidates at a May debate stated they did not believe in evolution, they were generally in sync with the bulk of the rank-and-file Republicans whose nomination they are seeking to obtain. #

On the upside, science fiction and fantasy authors must be doing very well in the US.

Bridging Religion & Science?

It’s not a topic I touch on often, mostly because I can’t be bothered with all the fanatics — of all persuasions — it tends to bring out of the woodwork. I nonetheless decided to republish a reply I made (still caught in the moderation queue) to a Science vs. God thread over at Time Magazine (which is sporting a swanky new design, I like it!).

Basically the question posed was:

Can the disconnect between science and religion be bridged?

Another more pertinent question, in my mind, is: “Should it be bridged?”
