District 9

Like every sci-fi internet geek, I’ve been in love with Neill Blomkamp’s short films for years. I had high hopes for his Halo adaption, which unfortunately will never see the light of day now. But, at least he got to make District 9, which I just saw today, and which almost makes up for the loss of Halo.

I’ve got little else to add to what every other reviewer has said, except that it was a great film from start to finish, even though I would personally have liked some more characterizations of the bad guys, than the at times over-much action scenes. It’s not that I dislike the action scenes, but the the soldiers taking pleasure in the misery of the prawns, the cold and cynical corporation heads; these people very much exist in the real world, and especially with the commercialization of war in Iraq, their motives, other than the fairly 2 dimensional stuff the film serves up, would have been a great addition to an already very relevant film.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some packing to do.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Liquid

I finished Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots a while ago, but forgot to post this review-thingie. I never thought I’d play it — I always hated Metal Gear Solid — and now that I have, I’m not sure how I can play any other games again; I’ve been so spoiled…

And so will you be, if you haven’t played MGS4 and still continue reading…

The Dark Knight Review

Rikke and I finally got around to seeing The Dark Knight today, and I thought, as the last man in the world to do so, I’d share my opinion on it, now that all the hype is (finally) dying out again.

Yeah, it’s pretty good. Rikke was less enthusiastic, but then she hated the first one, where I was only mildly entertained. But, almost as expected, we were both less than mind-blown by it. Going in, I was expecting a 7 (of 10), and that’s pretty much what I got.

Transformers Review

Optimus Prime

So to kick off our two week vacation (in which I’m doing nada, but for a single night with Metallica and some days back in Jutland), we went to see Transformers, more than a little worried that it would suck as much as it was hyped.

But you know what? It didn’t! In fact, it was fucking! AWESOME!

Mild spoilers!

Die Hard 4.0 Review

trailer_17

So, I caught an early screening of Die Hard 4.0, or Live Free or Die Hard (which title is the worst, I can’t quite decide on) yesterday evening at a filled Imperial here in Copenhagen. We were told that it was one of the earliest showings of the movie in the world, which I guess puts the pressure on me to post something akin to a review up here.

Now, let it be known that I love the first Die Hard, I sorta like Die Harder and I think Die Hard With a Vengeance is an alright action romp, but it has nothing to do with Die Hard.

Comic Club: The Prophet

Alright, so I promised to get started on Comic Club quite a while back, but I never picked up the reins and got it going proper. Well, it’s never too late I hope.

Spiderman 3 Doesn’t Suck

So Rikke and I went to check out Spider-Man 3 tonight, an contrary to what Brian and Morten had to say, it doesn’t suck. In fact, it’s a fun ride. And that’s it. Just like the last two…

Battlestar Galactica Season 3

Balter and the Six

I was a massive fan of Battlestar when I first started following it. As you may recall, I was down and out for about a week due to a serious infection in one of my molars and the following rootcanal work, and during that week, in between squirming from the pain, I managed to take in the mini-series and most of first season. And I was hooked. Bad.

Generally speaking, season 2 also had me glued to the tube every week, and while not every episode was the next coming, it was still very very enjoyable. The mid-season cliffhanger with the Pegasus had me clawing at the walls for months; only to have the entire crisis blow over in the first five minutes of the follow-up episode.

Man. I was bummed.

Battlestar Exodus

Like Khaled and Matt (spoilers galore, stand clear!), I guess I really should also chime in with some praise for the fourth episode of Battlestar Galactica of this, the third season. Spoilers ohoy!

While I was very surprised that they didn’t milk New Caprica for more story (budgetary restraints and the like), there is one single scene in the fourth episode, which more than makes up for it all. I’ve got some friends who are bound to read this (shu!), but for those of you who’ve seen it, you know the one I’m talking about.

How they manage to make it all work, while constantly veering the chasm of ‘rushedness’ is something of a feat really. Because in all honesty, the show often feels like it could’ve used some more time before and during production (I’ve got no beef with their post-production work). But they always manage to pull it together and really get me. Despite the fact, that when I look at series like Lost (which I also love, love, love), it’s clear that they are much more in control of things.

But yeah, I would’ve preferred the occupation and resistance of New Caprica to have lasted at least half a season. Or at least 6 episodes, so we could really get a sense of the troubles they were going through. It seems like such a waste to have the series take a drastic turn like the ending of season 2, only to see an almost complete reset within the first four episode of the new season. Obviously there’ll be a lot of residual stuff from New Caprica in this season, but still…

All said and done, I’m still head over heels for BSG.

X-Men 3 and Da Vinci

Hold on tight as we launch into one-sentence movie reviews for people who are too busy to ponder the details of things:

X-Men 3: The Last Stand

Brett Ratner is certainly no Brian Singer, but The Last Stand does manage not only to stay in the style of the first two movies, but also close up most of the lingering storylines in a fairly satisfactory way, as well as provide you with some ‘dude, awesome!’ moments along the way, many of which are actually lit tremendously well, despite the fact that it seems like either money or time was a factor as there are some minor effects here and there that could have used a bit more love, but hey the goddamn Golden Gate bridge gets lifted by Magneto, so I guess that makes up for the neutering of Wolverine and the offing of several of the major characters.

Thumbs Up and a well-earned opening day.

The Da Vinci Code

Literally ‘by the book’ in the most stiff and uninteresting manner possible, which is a shame, as I’d heard that Dan Brown had received an offer to turn it into a 24-like TV-series, which in my humble opinion would have been a much more interesting move.

Thumbs Down.

Both had Ian McKellen, and he steals all the attention from everyone. Also,

King Kong Review

King Kong

There is room for concern when one faces the prospect of watching a 3 hours and 7 minutes film about an overgrown monkey. Yes, haha, it’s an easy joke, but seriously, even fanboys like me have to leave a little room for concern, especially since it’s a remake of a 72-year-old black and white film, which I’ve personally never seen, but which has King Kong look more like a stop-motion novelty, a relic from a long gone past, than a movie monster icon.

Add to that the fragile legacy of having done something as staggering as The Lord of the Rings, it is hard to not be a little concerned that the facade would crack and show the real face of the Peter Jackson underneath, wallowing in his own newfound idolism, churning out Warner-length vanity pieces; remakes of his favorite films… Hmm.

Thankfully, Kong marks the return of the king (haha).

Land of the Dead (2005)

Rikke and I paid good money to see Land of the Dead yesterday. What a pile of steaming goat dung. Suspending disbelief, yes. Suspending all sense of logic, no. Surprisingly the reviews have been fairly kind to it, which I just don’t get. So I went to IMDB and checked out what the geeks had to say, which by and large was as pointless as the movie itself.

Listen up IMDB nerds: There is no scathing social commentary in LotD, which hasn’t already been seen several times over in Romero’s own movies! Furthermore, the characters are painfully shallow, to the point of being little better than cardboard cutouts. Zombies that communicate, have a leader and use guns?… I want to strangle someone.

Half-Life 2 (2004)

Half-Life 2 Logo

I’m hard pressed to come up with an experience similar to the one I had, sitting in my pitch black office at Io, big fat grin on my face and a sense of elevation, as the credits for Half-Life 2 rolled over the screen (in alphabetical order, not in ranked mind you). Fifteen minutes later (after having told the world) when I rode the bus home, on the first day of snow in Copenhagen to boot, I was entranced. Usually I hunker down in the far corner of the bus for the 35 – 45 minute ride home, and bury myself in a book. But that day I just couldn’t concentrate on anything but Half-Life 2.

Spoilers ohoy matey!

Halo 2

I chose to finish this, my Halo 2 review, even though I havn’t actually finished the game yet. Unorthodox, I know, but also I might add, very telling of the game.

You see, when I played Halo, the first Halo that is, I really really liked it. Bungie had crafted exactly the kind of sci-fi story that boys like me used to dream of when the lights went out and we were tugged in our beds (this was before puberty). Lumbering spaceships, alien civilizations, fullscale warfare on a distant planet (or better yet, a ring), mysterious structures and gameplay that would knock your teeth clean out of your mouth. On top of that, they even threw in some nice AI and vehicles that kicked every other first person shooters ass up and down.

So to call me psyched about Halo 2 would be an understatement. And yet I haven’t played it for a few weeks now, but I would wager that I was about 85 – 90% done, when I last threw down my controller in frustration.

This is what Halo 2 promised, from its very first showing at E3: You’re the Master Chief and you’re going to defend Earth from an alien invasion by kicking some serious bee-hind. And this is exactly what Halo 2 doesn’t deliver!

From here on in, this review is full of spoilers.

FeedDemon

I linked to it on the sidebar a while ago (I might even have mentioned it in the blog main), but it’s time for me to make sure the message gets across properly. What is the message?

FeedDemon.

Thaaat’s right. Feed-Demon. And what does it do? It eats RSS feeds (what’re those?) for breakfast, that’s what! If you read more than a few blogs a day I can’t emphasize the ease that FeedDemon will bring into your life :) — I currently check some 80-or-so blogs and about 20 – 30 ‘links’-feeds plus some 40 tech, news and nerd sites. And all in all it takes me about half an hour max. to walk through all of it.

Give it a try, you can even borrow my RSS blog feed and my RSS comments feed (and of course my referrer feed).

You’ll love it I’m sure!

FYI: It’s still in beta, but except for a group-deletion bug I haven’t had any problems.

Now if only every site had RSS feeds my life would be a lot easier (hint hint, nudge nudge :))
